Funeral Mass for Virgil John George, 76, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Friday, September 18, at 10:30 A.M. at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD, with Celebrant Fr. Ken Lulf officiating. There will be a visitation on Thursday, September 17, 2026, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a prayer service to follow. Pallbearers will be Arne Anderson, David Brown, Tony Brown, Steve Steiner, Jacob Karst, Jason Karst, Steve Lentsch, Bill Deutsch, and Aaron Deutsch. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Virgil’s coffee friends, past and present employees/customers of George’s Sanitation and many other family and friends. Interment will be at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Sisseton, South Dakota. Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Virgil was born on June 24, 1950, to Francis and Lucille (Cooper) George. He was the oldest son out of seven children. He attended country school at Drywood Lake through the 8th grade. Virgil married Vickie Waletich on September 16, 1972. Shortly after they married, they lived in Omaha for a year before returning to Sisseton and had 2 children, Scott & Chrissy. He drove a school bus for the Sisseton School District for over 25 years. Following this, he became the supervisor of the Roberts County Landfill, which led him to start his own business. He began George’s Sanitation in 1992 in Sisseton and later sold it in the early 2000s to semi-retire and help Scott build the business in Watertown. Together they built a successful business that is still going strong today. “Virg” loved playing cards such as May I? (a type of Rummy) and Pinochle with his cousins, where there was always plenty of laughs, friendly competition and the occasional heated game. He enjoyed watching his westerns and the Andy Griffith Show with the TV turned all the way up– loud enough that the whole house knew what he was watching. His phone would never be too far from his ear as he loved talking with people for hours. If you didn’t answer his call, he would keep calling back until you did. In 1998, he gained the title of grandpa when Karlee was the first grandchild born. Shortly after in 2001, Kamryn came along. In 2009, Samantha stole the show and his heart. In 2016, Virgil and his family had a devastating loss of their daughter, Chrissy. Virgil & Vickie then raised Sam from the age of six years. He took great pride in how she has grown into a beautiful, sweet young lady. Virgil was a hard worker and continued driving to Watertown to work 4 days a week shortly up until he became ill. He passed away on Grandparents Day, Sunday, September 13, 2026, after a short illness. He was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He will be missed by his large family and many friends.

He is survived by his wife Vickie; son Scott (Karmon) George of Watertown; three granddaughters Karlee (Travis) Zirbel, Kamryn (Ethan) Marx both of Watertown, and Samantha George of Sisseton; sisters Janice (Francis) Neilan, Cindy (Jerry) Steiner, Connie (Gregg) Christensen of Sisseton and brother-in-law David Brown Sr. of Watertown; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents Francis & Lucille George; daughter Chrissy George; two sisters Linda Quinn & Carolyn Brown; and one brother Ronnie George.
