Funeral Service for Winford Carlyle Schrader, 104 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Monday, November 18, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD, with Rev. William Schruba officiating. Organist will be Mona Greseth with special music by Pat Schubert and Keana Jackson. Pallbearers will be Alan Hanson, James Hanson, Kelly Raguse, Janet Raguse, Lori Jackson, and Jerry Doschadis. Interment will be in Rolling Hills Memorial Park Cemetery, Richmond, CA. There will be a visitation on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Winford was born on August 30, 1909 to William and Christine (Quale) Schrader near Wilmot, SD. He attended country school. He helped his parents on the farm and worked for Ben Goodhart in Browns Valley, MN and in Beardsley, MN for Lester Moore as a Blacksmith. Winford was united in marriage to Lena Dew in 1929 and she passed away in 1932, to this union Arlene was born. On June 10, 1937 Winford was united in marriage to Frances Buttke in Browns Valley, MN and to this union Janice was born. They moved to Peever and they milked cows and raised crops. Winford also owned and operated the Schrader Blacksmith Shop. In 1959 they moved their family to California to the San Francisco Bay area. In 1966 they moved to North Highland a suburb of Sacramento where Winford worked as a blacksmith. They also joined the Zion Lutheran Church in North Highland and were active members. Winford loved to garden, grow vegetables, and fruit trees. He loved doing iron and wood crafts that he made in his garage. He liked to read and travel back to South Dakota. Winford loved horses and was trying to breed miniature horses when he lived in Peever. He was known as honest and hardworking. In 2005, they moved to the Greenleaf Assisted Living Center, Sisseton, SD to be closer to their daughter, Arlene. In July 2010 they moved to Tekakwitha Living Center. Frances passed away on March 23, 2011. Winford passed away on November 14, 2013 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD with his daughters at his side.
Winford is survived by two daughters, Arlene and husband, Calvin Hanson of Sisseton, SD and Janice Stewart of Clearlake, CA; one sister Mrs. Fern Doschadis of Wilmot, SD; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Winford was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, one sister, Evelyn Simon; and two brothers, Willard and Norman.
