Funeral Service for Verna Ethel Moen, 88 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. Jeff Kalb officiating. Pallbearers will be John Schaunaman, Brett Hanson, Marlowe Samson, James Samson, Harold Johnson and Wayne Johnson. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Verna's nieces and nephews. Interment will be at Nidaros Cemetery, Hammer, SD. There will be visitation on Tuesday, September 8, 2009 from 9:00 A.M. until service time at Cahill Funeral Chapel. The Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Verna Ethel Johnson was born on June 6, 1921 in Roberts County, South Dakota to Martin H. and Esther M. (Olson) Johnson. She grew up and attended school in New Effington, SD and graduated from Sisseton High School. Following her education Verna was united in marriage to Harvey Moen on November 20, 1942 at the Trinity Parsonage, Sisseton, SD. The couple farmed near New Effington, SD and Hammer, SD before moving to Minneapolis, MN where Verna worked at a box factory. The couple moved to Watertown, SD in 1984. Harvey passed away August 12, 1989. Verna moved to Sisseton where she resided until her death on September 3, 2009 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD. Verna liked to crochet and she made lots of dollies, she liked to bake and was known for her apple pie and donuts. Verna and her husband loved to travel and visited almost every state in the United States.
Verna is survived by one sister, Mrs. Vera Samson of Brained, MN; and several nieces and nephews.
Verna was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Harriet Dempsey and Mabel Brewster-Bue; one brother, Morris Johnson; two nephews, Steven Dempsey and Douglas Brewster; and one niece Sharon Brodt.
