Funeral Service for Vera Samson, 91 of Baxter, MN formerly of Sisseton, SD will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Suzanne Benidt officiating. Organist will be Mona Greseth. Pallbearers will be Derek Stohr, Joe Brennan, Ben Goltz, Jesse Erickson, Paul Bender, and Matthew Samson. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Vera's Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Interment will be in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Vera Estella Johnson was born on July 9, 1923 in Enterprise Township, Roberts County, SD to Martin and Esther (Olson) Johnson. She attended county school. Vera was united in marriage to Norman Samson at Wheaton, MN. The couple made their home in Sisseton, SD. Vera worked in the food service at St. Peter's Catholic School for several years. In 1967 Sam and Vera purchased the D&D Recreation Center which they owned and operated until 1978. It was there that Vera introduced us all to her world famous potato salad. After selling the D&D, Vera went to work for Coteau Des Prairies Hospital in food service. She worked there for twenty two years before retiring. In October of 2008 Vera moved to Brainerd, MN to be near her family. She made her home at the Excelsior Place for the last six years. She loved her new home and made many new friends but never forgot the old ones. Vera enjoyed bowling, baking, crocheting and playing cards with her family. Vera passed away, surrounded by family on October 5, 2014 at Excelsior Place, Baxter, MN.
Vera is survived by five children, Marlowe and wife, Anita Samson of Lynn Haven, FL, Bonae and husband, Steve Stohr of Walker, MN, Janice and husband, Bill Erickson of Walker, MN, Gary and wife, Lisa Samson of Minneapolis, MN and James Samson and Denise of Wilmot, SD; seventeen grandchildren and twenty three great grandchildren.
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, Mary Ann; one brother, Morris Johnson; and three sisters, Verna Moen, Harriet Dempsey, and Mabel Bue.
