Obituary

Memorial Service for Truman M. Nelson, 85, of Sisseton, South Dakota will be held on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at 10:30 A.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, South Dakota. Officiating will be Pastor Kay Reeb. Organist Michelle Greseth. Urn Bearers will be Truman's grandchildren Clay Finnesand, Crystal Hoffman, Naomi Nelson, Miles Nelson, Britt Wickett, Brock Wickett, Kendra Benedetto, Erica Kilgore, and Hadley Meyer. Honorary Urn Bearers will be Truman's great-grandchildren Cinder, Brinley, and Chauncey Hoffman, Ripley and Ronan Colyer, Elijah and Samuel Nelson, Jaxton and Brodie Wickett and Lonnie Wickett, Roma and Rosie Benedetto, Truman and Lakeyn Kilgore. Inurnment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, South Dakota. There will be visitation on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, from 4:30 P.M. to 6:30 P.M. at Grace Lutheran Church with a Prayer Service at 6:30 P.M. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Truman Miles Nelson was born on January 23, 1939, to Ruth (Lenz) and Miles Nelson in Sisseton, SD. Truman was baptized in the Lutheran faith. He graduated from Sisseton in 1958 despite third grade being the hardest grade ever. Truman was united in marriage to Nova Opsal on January 18, 1959, in Sisseton. They lived on the family farm south of Sisseton. They were blessed with four wonderful children who will always treasure his sense of humor. Truman was a hunter and shooter since well before his mother thought he was old enough. He started competitive trapshooting in 1970, he received many awards for his trapshooting talents; South Dakota Sportsman of the year in 1984, South Dakota State Trapshooting Hall of Fame in 2014, he registered 250,000 clay targets when he was 80 in 2019. In 1986, he earned the SD Diamond Badge. He was honored into the North Dakota Hall of Honor in 2021. He represented South Dakota on the ATA Northern Zone Board of Directors, was a delegate at the Grand American for a decade and was the State Board President for four years. He won multiple awards in State Trapshoots in South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota, Nebraska Wyoming & Montana as well as the Spring Grand in Tucson, Arizona. He also had a Boone & Crockett White Tail Deer. He and his son-in-law Calvin Finnesand started the Shooting Sports Program in Roberts County. He financially supported many youth organizations such as Roberts County 4-H Shooting Sports, Rodeo and post Prom to name a few. He was a life member of Grace Lutheran Church and Hills & Valley Riding Club. He was a Roberts County Commissioner for 24 years, retiring on December 26, 2006. He was Sisseton's Alumnus of the year in 2017. He was on the Agency Township board and the Rau Foundation up until his death. With all of his accomplishments, he valued his family and friends the most.

Truman is survived by his four Children, Liz (Calvin) Finnesand of Peever, SD; Ken (Bonnie) Nelson of Sisseton, SD; Kris (Matt) Wickett of Brandon, SD and Kathy (Paul) Meyer of Rosholt, SD; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Four step-grandchildren, 14 step great-grandchildren, and one great-great step-grandchild. One Sister, Carol Jean Martenson of Sisseton, SD, four sisters-in-law, Barbara (Richard) Gray of Westminster, CO; Sharon Schmaus of St Paul, MN; Judy Opsal, St Michael, MN and Cheryl (Jim) Long of New Effington, SD.

Truman was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 60 years, his sister Connie and his two brothers-in-law, Eldon (Skookie) Martenson and Myles Johnson.
