Celebration of Life Service for Troy A. Opsal, 59, of Peever, SD will be held on Monday, October 5, 2020 at 11:00 A.M. at the Family Life Assembly of God Church, Sisseton, South Dakota with the Rev. Vern Donnell Officiating. Sara Aadland will be the organist and Bag Pipes by Jack Lindquist. Pallbearers will be Rick Brooks, Blaine "Woody" Hellwig, Randy "Bez" Deutsch, Troy Hellwig, Perry George and Ronnie Grajczyk. Honorary Pallbearers will be Derek Nieland, Brett Opsal, Jerome Opsal, Justin Opsal, Jason Opsal, Mark Opsal, Joel Nieland, Adam Rinas, John German Sr., Gerald German Jr., Wayne German Sr., Billy Brooks, Dale Brooks, Josh Brooks, Jay Hull, Nick Sing, Justin German, Gabe Kampeska, Patrick Deutsch, Billy Blanks, Glen "Casper" German, Wayne "Samples" German Jr., Kate Holman, Susan Deutsch, Mike Carlson, Tom Brewster, Sam Hanson, Brett Hanson, Richard Hanson, Tyler Hellwig, Twin nephews, Jerry & Jason Eastman, Randy Peterson, Erick Hill, Tony Hannasch, Mark Nelson, Kevin Nelson, Rick Huff, Mel Huff, Richard Huff,   Daniel Evenson, Bruce German Jr., Jaime Dahl, Lee Solberg, Jon Erdahl, Rick Krier, Tim Gunderson, & American Legion Post #50. Interment will be in the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Veterans Cemetery, Sisseton, SD with Military Rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post 3342. There will be visitation at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. The Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Troy was born to Allen & Patricia (Nelson) Opsal in Sisseton SD on April 26, 1961. He graduated from Sisseton High School & attended college at Black Hills State, painted grain elevators for Midwest Paint Service for a stint. He then felt the call of duty to his country so he joined the US Army in 1982 and was assigned to the 31 ^st Maintenance Company stationed at Ft. Irwin, CA. Troy earned an Army Service Ribbon, Expert Marksman (Rifle M-16), Good Conduct Medal and was honorably Discharged in 1984.   Troy married his High School sweetheart Geri in 1982 and they had 1 son Dustin Allen Opsal. Dustin blessed him with 2 grandchildren Cashius Troy Allen & Kaylee Raine Opsal. They were his pride and joy. He often said "If I knew being a Grandparent was this wonderful I'd have become one first". He loved attending all of their sporting events and concerts & never failed to ask them "who loves you" Papa loves you" every single day. He was extremely active in their lives helping his son raise them. After discharge from the US Army, Troy & Geri stayed in CA as she had her tour of duty in the USAF to complete. This is where Sterling Paint Service came to fruition. Troy worked for one of the largest builders in Southern California. It was not uncommon for them to paint 5 complete houses top to bottom in a day. Troy loved taking his family to Dumont Dunes to camp. It was a great place to race & ride 4-wheelers. They also enjoyed white water rafting in the Kern River & one of the most memorable was his climb to top the world arm wrestling championships held in Las Vegas, Nevada in the 1980s, this is where he was in the movie "Over the Top" starring Sylvester Stallone. Troy was always up for a new adventure. He bungee jumped off a hot air balloon in California. One of his other adventures was winning the over age 40 Bull riding contest that he entered after attending a golf tourney. Troy rode the bull in his golf shoes and ended up winning it! He said "well that's because I was too scared to let go". He never surprised his family what he would try next. Troy had many hobbies, he loved to golf, shooting, 4- wheeling, snowmobiling, fishing & ice fishing, poker, vegetable garden, collecting Native American Artifacts. He loved to fly and had plans to buy another powered parachute before his cancer diagnosis. Troy owned one for a few years and gave many rides to people in the area. He loved the freedom of being up in the air sometimes pushing the limits. Troy had a great sense of humor, he was always making others laugh, he loved to scare Troy "Willie" Hellwig on the job at all times or Josh or Ricky Brooks down at the shop. At home it was scaring Cash or Kaylee as they came out of the bathroom.   He used to tease and play with his nephew Derek Nieland when he was little & they had many fun times laughing their head off. He liked to take the time to teach the grandkids the importance of treating everyone with respect, with human decency, holding the door for elders & to work hard for what you want in life and most of all if you're going to do a job do it right or don't do it at all.   He loved pulling quarters out of kid's ears, always playing a trick or joke on someone. He never met a stranger as he often had to stop and talk to everyone no matter where he went. Troy was one of those people that did great deeds for strangers not for glory but because as he said, "it's the right thing to do". Troy was a member of the American Legion Post #50, Roberts County Sportsman Club, a proud member of the International Union of Painters Union District Council 82, a member of VVCC for many years serving on the Board of Directors for 3 years as well as a member of the Dakota Winds Golf Course Hankinson, ND.

Troy passed away peacefully at home on September 30, 2020 with his wife Geri and son Dustin holding him and his hand after a courageous battle with cancer.

Troy is survived by his wife of 38 years Geri Opsal, Peever SD; his Son Dustin Opsal Sisseton, SD; his two grandchildren Cashius Troy Allen Opsal & Kaylee Raine Opsal Sisseton, SD; His Uncle Danny Opsal, Buffalo, MN; his Brother Brent (Rose) Opsal, Rapid City, SD; Sister Treva (Joel) Nieland, Rapid City, SD; numerous cousins, nieces & nephews;, & mother-in-law whom he respected & loved Lorraine German, Peever, SD.

Troy is preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Patricia Opsal; his father-in-law Gerald "Smoky" German; his grandparents, uncles, and aunts.

Troy asked that I leave you all with this, "Don't remember me as I died, remember me as I lived". We as his family will always remember him as a beloved husband, father, Papa & friend to all. He was one of the hardest working men ever. He made sure his family was always provided for, he was our patriarch, a true patriot, who loved our Country. He made sure one of the last things we did was vote by absentee ballot (while we were in Fargo VAMC) and he had Dusty deliver them to the court house. He always had "our six" and we always had his. We respected how he fought his battle till the very end and continued to stay until every last detail was complete here on Earth. To know Troy was to love Troy. We know we will see him again, that is what will keep us and sustain us.
