Funeral Service for The Rev. Deacon Vern L. Cloud, 70 of Waubay, SD will be held on Monday, September 30, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church, Browns Valley, SD with The Right Rev. John T. Tarrant the Tenth Bishop of South Dakota. Pianist will be Billy Kohl. Pallbearers will be Iver Cloud III, Everette Keeble, Bradley Cloud, Floyd Cloud, Robert Campbell, Kenny Seaboy, Louis Flammond and Eric Hovelson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dennis, Keeble, Delano Renville, Beaman Seaboy, Brian Rodlund, John Cloud III, Edward Seaboy, John Donnell, rick Donnell, Dan Donnell, Jerry Flute, Clayton Adams, Orville Seaboy, Pat Lebean, Don Metcalf, Don Eagle, Rev. Kim Founder, and Lester Crawford. Interment will be in the St. John the Baptist Episcopal Cemetery, Browns Valley, SD. There will be a Wake Service on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the Tribal Community Center at 7:00 P.M. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangement.
On September 28, 1942, Vern was born to Iver and Gertrude (Enoch) Cloud in Sisseton South Dakota. Vern grew up in the Sisseton and Old Agency area. He attended grade school at the Tekakwitha Catholic School and Wahpeton lndian School. Vern graduated from the Flandreau Indian School in May of 1961. After graduation he enlisted in the US Army and served from 12/20/61 through 3/ll/65. On June 7, 1964 he was united in marriage to Sharon Seaboy at the St. James Episcopal Church, Enemy Swim SD. Three daughters were born from this marriage: Kimberly L. Cloud of Waubay SD, Jodi L. Cloud and Michele L. Cloud, both of Aberdeen SD. Vern attended college at both Southern and Northern State University. His field of study was in draftsmanship with a minor in business administration. Vern worked with the BlA in Aberdeen SD, and the Department of Labor (Employment Office) Sisseton SD. Vern also served as the Enemy Swim Council Representative from 1971-1974, he was then elected as Tribal Secretary and served from 1975-1980. In 1981, he again served on Council for an additional two years. In the late 1980's and into the 1990's Vern worked for the Tribal Planning and Economic Development Department and was later the Director of Construction Management. Vern retired in April of 2009. Vern belongs to several organizations: Council of Indian Architects and Engineers, American Indian Cattlemen Association, American Quarter horse Association, Native American Business Association, American Legion Post #129, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Brotherhood of Christian Unity, Brotherhood of St. Andrews. Vern was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church of the Sisseton Mission. He served on many Diocesan committees and was the Niobrara Deanery Itancan for many years. After many years of studying and being involved with the local churches he was ordained a Deacon on September 10, 2011 at the South Dakota Diocesan Convention in Pierre, South Dakota.
Vern was proceeded in death by his parents, two brothers Harvey and Floyd, two sister's Marlis Martin and Rena Cloud.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters, one son Jerry Locke and grandchildren Rusty and Jeri. One(l) brother: Iver Cloud II (Twila), Three(3) sisters: Ruth Campbell of Waubay, Claudette (David) Anderson of Agency Village SD, Fern Cloud of Granite Falls MN and many, nieces and nephews. In Vern's traditional-way he would like to acknowledge his other extended family members as: Brothers: Jerome Renville Sr., Duane Hislaw, and Don Metcalf - Sister: Barbee Hovelson Son: Brian Rodlund - grandsons: Jerome Renville Jr., Brian Jr, and Moses Rodlund, Aric Hovelson, and Kennedy (Eddie) Owen.
