Funeral Service For Sylvester Goodteacher Sr., 75, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at 2:00 PM at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD, with Rev. Fr. Jerry Ranek, and Jr. Heminger officiating. Pallbearers will be Dallas Goodteacher, Clayton Ellingson Jr., Alvah Quinn Jr., Franky Jackson, Kris Kohl, Julian Johnson, Austin Goodteacher, Mason Kohl, Brandon Goodteacher, and Joshua Kohl. Honorary Pallbearers will be Brian, Rick, Durwood, Delano, and Robert Renville, Sylvester Yellow Back, Michael Demarrias, Jason Hull, Clayton Ellingson Sr., Tom Wilson, Jon Eagle, Mike Selvage Sr., Jerry Flute, Irvin Hill Sr., Erick Hill, B.J. Hill, Irvin Hill Jr., Doug Renville, Leo John Hull, Frances Charging Cloud, Tom Tease, Jack Jackson, and all of the people he worked with at the tribe. Drum Group will be Buffalo Lake Singers. Interment will be in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be wake services on Thursday, and Friday, January 30, and 31, at 7:00 PM at St. Kateri's Hall in Sisseton, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Sylvester Wallace Goodteacher was born on April 3, 1944 in Peever, SD to Homer Jerome Goodteacher and Rosalie Standfast. When Sylvester was four months old his mother passed away and he was raised by an aunt Lucy Quinn, grandmother Bessie Goodvoice-Sing, and his stepfather Fred Kohl. He attended Sisseton, Wahpeton, and Flandreau Indian Schools. On October 25, 1966 he was married to Tammy Wilson at Wheaton, MN. The couple lived in San Francisco, CA for two years before returning to Sisseton. Three children were born; Sylvester Jr., Sheila, and Tanya. When in Sisseton, Sylvester worked for the Burlington, and Milwaukee railroads, as a counselor for the SWO alcohol program, was director of the JOM program, and worked with Jerry Flute in the AAIA program. He was also an aid for several tribal chairmen. Sylvester worked as a DJ for KXSW radio station playing his oldies music. He loved sitting outside fixing on his car and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They kept him young at heart.
Sylvester is survived by his wife of 53 years, Tammy, son Chuck Goodteacher, and daughter Tanya Goodteacher of Sisseton, SD, daughter Sheila Goodteacher of Fresno, CA, brothers, Gilbert, Robert, Mike, and Joe Kohl of Sisseton, SD, brother Fred Kohl Jr. of Henning, MN, sisters, Philomene Johnson of Fargo, ND, Goldie Jackson, Lois Kohl, and Mary Hill of Sisseton, SD and Patsy Ellingson of Watertown, SD, special nephews, Martin Goodteacher, and Thurman Frenier, special niece Mary Jo Keeble, fourteen grandchildren, and twenty-three great-grandchildren, numerous nieces , nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Homer, Rosalie, Lucy Quinn Hill, grandmother, Bessie Sing, sisters, Jermaine Sitting Crow, Lucille Kohl Hacker, Celesta Goodteacher, and Theresa Frenier, and brother Alvah Quinn Sr.
