Funeral services for Steven Darrell George, 62, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at 10:30 AM at the St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton, SD with Rev. Fr. Tony Dummer Celebrant. The organist will be Cindy Marohl and song leader will be Sandi Jaspers. Pallbearers will be Stanley Hippen, Dean Lehrke, Paul Solnar, Gordon Groos, Terry Deutsch, and Randy Peterson. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Steven's family and friends. Military Rites will be provided by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and the Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery. There will be visitation on Monday, February 11, 2013 from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at St. Peter's Catholic Church, with a 5:00 PM prayer service. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
The family of Steven Darrell George invite you to share the celebration of his life. He was born September 30, 1950 in the Sisseton Tekakwitha Hospital to Darrell V. and Ardelle (Joyce Rolstad) George, and was baptized on October 11, 1950. He grew up in Sisseton and attended St. Peters Catholic School. The family moved to Townsend, MT and later returned to Sisseton. During his senior year he moved with his folks to Seattle. Steven didn't care for Seattle and loved his Dakota's. So he moved back and lived with Uncle Norman and Aunt Lois Tchida. He graduated SHS in 1968 and enlisted in the Army with some fellow classmates. Steven served his country from September 30, 1968 until October 1, 1971. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He also received a Certificate of Proficiency in vehicle repair. After his discharge he met the love of his life Boni K. Horton and they were united in marriage in Aberdeen, SD on May 1, 1973. While he was living in Sisseton he held many jobs. He worked as a carpenter, worked for Cenex, and worked as a SHS School Bus Driver. Then by the advice of his Dad he moved to Edmonds, Washington where the Post Office was hiring Veterans. Again he missed the Dakota's and transferred to Fargo, ND Post Office and worked there from 1978 to 1994. From 1994 to 2008 he worked as the Post Master in Eden, SD and retired in 2008. He then worked part time positions at Pamida, Tri State Water; but his favorite part time job was working for Hippy at Hippens Steak House and was affectionantly known as "Mr. Happy". Steve loved to fish, hunt, bowl, play pool, and pinochle. He was also a proud dad and grandpa. Steve was also the 2nd vice commander of the American Legion Post in Sisseton, SD. In 2008 he had the first of three heart attacks and then later was diagnosed with cancer. The heart attacks were a piece of cake compared to the cancer as he said "really kicked his butt". He was a model patient, as the Dr's told him but too many issues came up and that the cancer became untreatable. Admitted to TLC to rehab, which was a blessing, everyone there were his angels watching over him. He went home to heaven on February 5, 2013 at TLC facility in the arms of his extremely loving care taker, Boni.
He leaves behind his wife Boni of Sisseton, SD; two children, Chad and wife Kerri George of Leonardtown, Maryland, and Garrett George of Great Falls, MT; one awesome grandson Caden Jack George, who is busy being five years old; one sister Bonnie Songer of Helena, MT, and one brother Alan "Boots" George of Sisseton, SD; mother-in-law Gustie Horton of Sisseton, SD; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Steven was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Dicky, and a brother-in-law Louis "Skip" Songer.
