Funeral Service for Shirley Ann Peterson, 91, of Sisseton, South Dakota will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at 2:00 P.M. at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, South Dakota with Pastor Sheila Pohl officiating. Organist will be Ollie Yost and Special Music by Holly Anderson and Averee Anderson. Pall bearers will be Dustin Currence, Ember Englund, Ross Currence, Kendra Peterson, Trevor Peterson, Matthew Peterson, Travis Peterson, Aaron Peterson and Nicholas Peterson. There will be visitation on Friday, December 30, 2022 from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. with a Prayer Service at 6:00 P.M. at Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, South Dakota. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, South Dakota. The Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Shirley Ann Iverson was born on May 29, 1931, to Magnus and Alvina (Schlekeway) Iverson. Shirley was baptized and confirmed at Hope Lutheran Church rural Sisseton, SD. She grew up in the Sisseton Hills area, attended Stock Country School, and later went to Sisseton High School where she graduated High School in 1950. Shirley was united in marriage to Gordon L. Peterson on December 31, 1950, at Hope Lutheran Church. A few days after their wedding, Gordon was called to serve in the Army. Weeks passed and Shirley was boarding a train enroute to Seattle, WA, where they spent time together, prior to his ship leaving for Korea. She returned to SD alone and patiently waited for his return in 1952. Once he returned, they made their home together in Long Hollow Township, northwest of Sisseton, SD, for over fifty-five years. In 2008, they purchased a home and moved to Sisseton, SD. Shirley loved her family, watching them grow gave her pure enjoyment. Once grandchildren and great-grandchildren came, her heart was full. Shirley was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD. She had an active role in Alter Guild and her Bible Study group. She loved being involved in life on the farm, especially in the spring to see the newborn calves and watch them grow. She also worked at Tekakwitha Living Center for approximately 20 years as a CNA. Shirley passed away on December 24, 2022 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, South Dakota, surrounded by her family.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 72 years Gordon L Peterson of Sisseton, SD; four children Carol (Kenneth) Currence of Sisseton, SD; Donald (Kelly) Peterson, Twin Brooks, SD; Ronald (Myla) Peterson, Sisseton, SD; Larry (Kathleen) Peterson, Sisseton, SD. Nine grandchildren; Dustin (Michelle) Currence, Fargo, ND; Ember (Larry) Englund, Rosholt, SD; Ross (Brittney) Currence, Aberdeen, SD; Kendra Peterson, Sisseton, SD; Trevor Peterson (fiancé Cassie), Sisseton, SD; Matthew Peterson, Watertown, SD; Travis (Kallyn) Peterson, Sisseton, SD; Aaron Peterson (friend Megan), Akron, IA; Nicholas Peterson, Sioux Falls, SD. Six great-grandchildren Kasen, Kenley Currence, Fargo, ND; Jaxtin Currence, Rosholt, SD; Adelynn, Leah Currence, Aberdeen, SD; Avery Peterson, Sisseton, SD; one sister Erla Steiner, Sisseton, SD; two sisters-in-law Betty (Robert) Iverson, Sisseton, SD and Mary Ann (Royce) Iverson, Claire City, SD and numerous other family and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by infant daughter Gale Elaine, parents Magnus and Alvina Iverson, brothers Willis, Royce, Robert, Lynn, Dennis and sisters Debra and Wendy.
