Shirley (Ellingson) Foell, age 90, of Wilmot, Peever, and Watertown, South Dakota, passed away peacefully on December 1, 2025, at SMP Catherine North in Fargo.
Shirley was born August 13, 1935, to Henry and Blanche (Jones) Ellingson in Sisseton, South Dakota, as the third of what would eventually be five daughters. She grew up on the family farm north of Wilmot, later moving into town when her parents purchased a café. Shirley graduated from Wilmot High School in 1953 and attended Northern State College, where she earned a teaching certificate in 1954.
On Easter Sunday, April 18, 1954, Shirley married Darrell Foell of rural Peever. Shirley taught school at Corona for a half school year and at Peever for one school year before devoting herself to being a full-time farm wife, first on a farm west of Lohre's Station before settling three miles south of Peever in 1966. She and Darrell raised five sons on the Peever farm and lived there until 2008. After retirement from farming, they moved to Watertown, and in 2023, Shirley and Darrell entered nursing home care.
Shirley spent her days dedicated to her family. She worked tirelessly beside Darrell and her sons in the field and in the dairy barn and finished the day filling the dinner table with a hardy meal. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren all knew her as Granny and her hugs were as sought-after as her cookies. Shirley enjoyed bowling, cooking, and gardening, and she was a wizard at playing cards, ready for a game any time, any place. She was also an active member of the VFW Auxiliary, where she gave generously of her time and spirit.
Shirley is survived by her sons: David (Debra), Daniel (Lori Hahn), Dean (LaVonne Voller Parsons), Darwin (Sharon), and Darrin (Darcie Bontje); her sister Dorothy Christensen; as well as 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Darrell; a great-grandchild, Madeline; her parents, Henry and Blanche Ellingson; her sisters Lauretta Hoff, Carla Larson, and Gail Raabe, and Darrell's parents, Lewey and Louise Foell.
Shirley will be remembered for her kindness, her hospitality, her devotion to family, her beautiful laugh, and the joy she brought to those around her. Her legacy lives on in the love she shared and the values she instilled in her sons and her grandchildren.
