Funeral service for Sherman S. Hopkins, 71, of Sioux Falls, SD will be held on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at St. James Episcopal Church, Enemy Swim, SD with Fr. Conrad Ciesel, Deacon Bitsey Ciesel, Valerie Augustson and Episcopal Lay Readers officiating. Pianist will be Billy Kohl. Drum group will be the Battle Crew. Pallbearers will be Jordan Biddell, Joel Biddell, Jason Biddell, Garret Keoke, Jake Bellonger, Rudy Bellonger, Cameron Frank, Roland Frank, Dion Bernard, Maurice Monteau, Chad Monteau, Levi Hopkins, Jessie Hopkins, Delbert Hopkins Jr., Chris Tennis, Johnson Hopkins and Jared Oreskovich Sr Honorary Pallbearers will be Kit Fox Society, Chris Fayant, Gerald Zephier, Gerald Thompson Sr., Sanford Hospital, Ava's House, All Vietnam Veterans, Family and Relatives. Interment will be in the St. James Episcopal Cemetery, Waubay, SD with military rites by Kit Fox Society. Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Sherman was born May 1, 1950 to Solon and Beulah Hopkins in the old IHS building In Sisseton SD From there enlisted into the U.S. Navy 1/29/1969-10/1/1970 after he returned Sherman graduated December 18 th 1971 from Flandreau Indian School. Sherman spent time traveling and living in different parts of the country. He lived in Las Angeles CA, Fargo ND, Lawrence, Topeka and Leavenworth KS and Sioux Falls SD. His hobbies included challenging anyone to a game of cribbage and winning every time. He always had his cribbage board with him and taught his friends and family the game as well. He love listening to powwow music. Sherman remembered and laughed at his first dance outfit which was made out of gunny sacks that he made when he was very young. He also sang old moccasin game songs that he remembered from his childhood and was very good at it. Sherman was known to cook up a storm potatoes and hamburger gravy and loved all kinds of soup and pickled herring with a fondness for sardines and crackers. Sherman was a very humorous person who always made everyone laugh. Sherman spoke the Dakota language fluently which he learned from his Grandma and was willing to give his friends and members of his family lessons at any time. He also taught his nephew how to butcher and prepare deer. He was a godfather to his nephews and niece (Joel and Jordan Biddell, and Cameron Frank., Shawn Sullivan). Sherman is survived by Lynelle Robertson (daughter), Brooklyn Bernard (granddaughter), great grandchildren Maurice Redday IV and Bryson Redday, Dion Bernard (Grandson) great grandchildren Dion Bernard Jr., Layla Bernard, Tyler Bernard, granddaughter Ameenah Bernard, Surviving Sisters Beatrice Biddell and Estelle Hopkins; brothers Paul Smith, Marcell Hopkins, Joel Biddell, Jordan Biddell and Cameron Frank; and many nieces and nephews and godchildren.
Sherman was preceded in death by his Parents; infant brother Burdett Hopkins; sister Roberta Hopkins; grandmother Agnes Hopkins; brothers Delbert Hopkins Sr. and Jimmy Hopkins; uncle Sherman Daniel Hopkins, nieces Joni Biddell and Whitney Hopkins; maternal grandparents, aunties and uncles.
