Funeral Service for Shalyn Dawn Spider, 35 of Wilmot, SD will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 2:00 P.M. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Community Center with Rev. Fr. Charles Chan, Rev. Fr. Conrad Ciesel, Deacon Betsy Ciesel, St. Mary's Lay Readers, John Cloud III Sr. Catechist officiating. Pianist will be Billy Kohl. Pallbearers will be Brennen Block, Rishawn Rios, Andre Rios, Ross Torgerson, Kevin LaFontaine Jr., BruceGerman Jr., Jason LaFontaine Sr., Matt Cleveland. Honorary Pallbearers Rachel Crawford, Jess Squirrel Coat, Lindsey Abraham, CeCe Block, Tonia Brown, Lenora Begay, Mike McClelland, Cyn Zara, Lorrena Alameda, numerous cousins, Navy Buddies and softball team. Interment will be at St. Mary's Episcopal Cemetery, Agency Village, SD with Military Rites by the Kit Fox Society and United Veterans. Wake Services will be held at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, at 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 8, 2019, Monday, September 9, 2019 and Tuesday, September 10, 2019. Shalyn passed away at her home on September 6, 2019. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Shalyn Dawn Spider was born on February 10, 1984 in Sisseton, SD to Albert Spider Jr. and Jody LaFontaine. Shalyn attended Sisseton Public School and graduated in 2002. Shalyn joined the US Navy in July 2003, graduating basic in Chicago and was stationed in San Diego, CA for four years while stationed on the Navy Ships USS Benfold, WSS Higgins and the USS John Paul Jones DDG5, all were Arleigh Burke Class destroyers, as an engineer and a yeoman. She served during the Iraq Freedom Campaign. She was awarded the national Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Navy Unit Commendation Medal. She traveled Japan, Australia, Hawaii, and many other places around the world. She lived in California for six years before moving back to Sisseton, SD in 2009 and worked at IHS, Dakota Connection, Woodland Cabinetry Inc. and Dakota Magic Casino. Shalyn loved playing sports, her two favorites being basketball and softball. She loved to draw, write and listen to music. Shalyn loved her family and all her nieces and nephews. She was a proud auntie.
Shalyn is survived by her mother, Jody LaFontaine; grandmother JoAnn Spider; three siblings, Jade LaFontaine of Wilmot, SD, Brennen Block of Wilmot, SD and Kelsey Block of New Effington; six nieces and nephews, Rishawn Rios, Andre Rios, Julius Stutterheim, Kaiden German, Kaia German, and Kysa Block; Aunt/Godmother Betty Neilan and numerous Loving uncles, aunts, and cousins.
Shalyn was preceded in death by her Grandparents, Albert Spider Sr., Melvin Robertson, Sr., Doris LaFontaine; Uncle /Godfather Gary Neilan; Aunt/Godmother Michelle LaFontaine.
