Obituary

Funeral service for Sampson DuMarce Sr., Wi Casta, " The Man", 82, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Monday, May 8, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. at Heipa District Center, Veblen, SD. Pastor Milton Owen and Clyde Kampeska Lay Reader will be officiating. Drum group will be Ridge Runners. Pallbearers will be Todd St. John, Conrad DuMarce, Steven Owen, Hazen DuMarce Jr., Dion Marks, Brendon LaBatte, Dylan DuMarce, Bruce DuMarce Sr., Scott DuMarce, and Varden Hopkins Jr. Honorary Pallbearers will be Nicademus Woods, Wallace Hosie Sr., Chuck Guy, Terry Weindebach, Cam Brown, Jonathan Gill, Leonard DuMarce and, Vine Marks Sr. and The Hayes Brothers and all Humpena players. Wake Service will be held on Saturday and Sunday (all night) at the Heipa District Center, Veblen, SD at 7:00 P.M. Interment will be at Mayasan Presbyterian Cemetery, Sisseton, SD with Military Rites by the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Kit Fox Society. Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.

Sampson DuMarce Sr. was born March 13, 1936 to Eva Ella (Robertson) and Samual DuMarce Sr. at home in Veblen, SD. He attended Wahpeton School and was needed at home so he Sampson attended country school at Veblen. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1953, and was honorable discharged in 1959. He was an avid trapper and hunter. He worked the fields for local Veblen Farmers. He was an experienced auto mechanic and loved to work on his family's automobiles. His greatest love was playing moccasin. Him and his younger brothers, Hazen and Samuel "Sonny" learned the game from their older brothers, Levi "Hepi" DuMarce Sr. and Sam Alec "Chaske" DuMarce until their passing. Then picked up the Humpena game again with his son Waylon DuMarce, Hazen DuMarce Jr., and Varden Hopkins Jr.. Over his lifetime he won many championships. He was married to Barbara St. John in Wheaton, MN in 1960. They had seven children, Tammie DuMarce, Debra DuMarce, Helena and (Tim LaBatte), Cynthia and (Dave) DuMarce, Brenda DuMarce, and Wade (Rose) DuMarce and Maxine DuMarce and Keith Huff. In 1974 he met Christine Hopkins from this union; they had three children, Waylon DuMarce and Donette Red Bear, Joyce DuMarce and Craig Lewis, Sampson DuMarce Jr. and fifty seven great grandchildren, thirty eight great grandchildren and two great great-grandchildren, four sisters, and many nieces and nephews. Sampson passed away at his home on May 4, 2017 surrounded by his family.
