Services for Sadie Lewis Gruby, 89, of Sisseton, South Dakota will be held on Wednesday, May 11, at 2:00 P.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church at Sisseton, South Dakota with the Rev. William Schruba officiating. Organist will be Estelle Pearson and soloist will be Pat Schubert. Burial will be in the Zoar Lutheran Cemetery at Grenville, South Dakota. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters and great-grandchildren and the Tekakwitha Living Center Staff. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Wayne and Curtis Wike, Troy and Todd Mussetter, Trevor and Wade Gruby, Nathan Misterek, and Nicholas Veflin. Visitation will be Tuesday, May 10, 2011 from 2:00 to 7:00 P.M. with a Scripture and prayer service at 7:00 P.M. in the Cahill Funeral Chapel. Visitation will continue Wednesday, one hour prior to the services in the church. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Sadie was born August 15, 1921, in Roberts County, South Dakota to Lauris G and Martha (Solberg) Lewis. She was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church on December 6, 1936. Sadie attended One Road Township School and Sisseton High School. On July 23, 1938, she married Stanley Gruby in Sisseton, South Dakota. They were the parents of five children. The couple purchased farm land on the east side of Pickeral Lake and made this their home until early 1996. Together they managed and operated two resorts, RoyKota Beach at Roy Lake from 1957 to 1961 and East Shore Resort on Pickeral Lake from 1962 to 1964.She was a member of Zoar Lutheran Church before becoming a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was a member of Zoar Lutheran Ladies Aid and Pickeral Lake Bible Study Group. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, playing games with family and friends, and will be remembered for the many beautiful quilts she made for family members. Sadie moved to Sisseton in 1996 and later became a resident at Greenleaf Assisted Living before moving to Tekakwitha Living Center in 2004. Her husband preceded her in death in December, 2003. Sadie passed away on May 6, 2011 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD.
Sadie is lovingly survived by her five children: Helen (Eugene) Wike, Great Fall, Mont., Elaine Mussetter, North Port, Fla., Raymond (Joyce) Gruby, Bismarck, ND, Norma (Michael) Misterek, Milbank, SD, and Betty (Rodney) Veflin, Sisseton, SD; 15 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and three sisters: Agnes Grinde, Watertown, SD, Grace Melander of Littleton, CO, and Florence Pederson, Lakewood, CO. and many nieces and nephews.
Sadie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Stanley, five sisters and four brothers.
