Funeral Service for Rubin Gerald Vasend, 85, of Claire City, SD will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. at the Family Life Assembly of God Church, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. Vernal Donnell, Rev. Robert Beasley and Rev. James Allen officiating. Special Music by Gloria and Irv Slaamot, June and Richard Evenson, Pat Schubert, Holly Anderson and Orville Bubak. Pallbearers will be Darren Vase, Dominic Vase, Dawson Vase, Dustin Thode, Tanner Thode, Ari Shafer and Stuart Quam. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Rubin's Friends and Neighbors. Interment will be in the Spring Valley Cemetery, Claire City. SD. Military Rites will be provided by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. There will be visitation on Monday, May 21, 2012 at the Cahill Funeral Chapel from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with family present from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with a 7:00 PM Prayer Service. There will be visitation one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Tuesday. Rubin was born on December 28, 1926 in Crosby, ND to Ole and Inga (Hernesmark) Vasend. He grew up on the homestead family farm. He attended The Otto Elementary School in Bossko Township and Sisseton High School. Following his education he was drafted into the Army Signal Corp in December 1944. He served in the United States Army from May 31, 1945 to December 20, 1946. He received the World War II Victory Medal, European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Army of Occupation medal ~ Germany, and 1 Overseas Bar. Rubin was united in marriage to Lorraine Aadland on April 1, 1949 in Sisseton, SD. He was a farmer, and owned and operated Rubin's Radio & TV Shop and Rubin's 2-Way. Rubin was a member of The Family Life Assembly of God Church and the American Legion Post #50. Rubin was united in marriage to Evelyn Haaland on January 1, 1975 in Sioux Falls, SD. Rubin was a 1st class ham radio operator. He liked fishing, and hunting. He was a licensed private pilot. He played harmonica and liked to work with computers. Rubin passed away on May 19, 2012, at the Tekakwitha Nursing Center, Sisseton, SD.
Rubin is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Claire City, SD; five children, Carolyn and (Pete) Lein of Farmington, MN, Colette and (Stuart) Quam of Aberdeen, SD, Jerry and (Katerina) Vasend of Charleston, SC, Mary Beth and (Darren)Vase of Black River Falls, WS, and Natalie and (Ari) Shafer of Shakopee, MN; two step children, Doug and (Sue) Haaland of Sacramento, CA and Carolyn and (Hagag) Soliman of Henderson, NV; one sister, Janice Milliken of Spokane, WA; twelve grandchildren; six step grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and eleven step great grandchildren.
Rubin was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Gerald Rubin Vasend, Borghild Olson, Thore Vasend; half-sisters, Cora (Wassen) Jacobson, and Myrtle Wassen, step son Dan Haaland, one grandchild, Little Teddy Thode, and one great grandchild, Lucus Rubin Boesflplug.
