Obituary

Funeral Service for Rosemarie Laing, 94 of Virginia, MN formerly of Sisseton, SD will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. Fr. Joseph Hitpas, OMI officating. Organist will be Colette Hull. Pallbearers will be Craig George, Theron Stephens, Travis Stephens, Kolton Stephens, Jerald Stephens and Cory Grimsrud. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Rosemarie's Family & Friends. Interment will be in the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at the Cahill Funeral Chapel from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM and visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to the Funeral Service at Cahill Funeral Chapel.
Rosemarie Schmaus was born on June 29, 1919 in Plentywood, Montana to George and Rosa (Schmid) Schmaus, one of four children. They moved to Park Rapids, MN when she was a baby. Then the family moved to Peace River Canada in 1927. They left there by horse and covered wagon in 1929 and settled in Sisseton, SD. Rosemarie attended Long Hollow School and graduated from the 8 th grade. In her early 20's she was employed at the Killleson Hotel in Sisseton. On October 4, 1942 Rosemarie was united in marriage to Marshall Laing. The couple had one daughter, Carol Jean. They farmed in Enterprise Township near Claire City, SD from 1942 to 1976 when they retired and moved to Akeley, MN. In 1990 they moved to Gun Barrel City, TX. Rosemarie was a great cook and baker and always fed a bunch, even though she only had one daughter. She always had nieces and nephews that she took care of as her own. Rosemarie passed away on April 15, 2014 at St. Michaels Health Center, Virginia, MN.

Rosemarie is survived one daughter, Carol Jean Stephens of Gun Barrel City, TX; two grandsons, Theron J. Stephens of Onida, SD and Travis Jay Stephens of Kemp, TX; three great grandchildren, Ashley Marie Stephens of Virginia, MN, Carly Jean Stephens of Onida, SD, and Kolton Marshall Stephens of Kemp, TX; and nieces and nephews.

Rosemarie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; one brother George Schmaus; and two sisters, Theresa George and Emily Schmaus.
