With profound sadness we announce the passing of Romona Jane Richter, our loving and devoted mother and friend to all whose lives she touched. She passed away peacefully at her home, on September 26, 2019 due to a yearlong battle with Pancreatic Cancer. Romona was born June 15, 1941 in Fort Totten, North Dakota to Daniel and Mary (Belgarde) Ortley. She began her education at St. Michaels Indian School, then the Fort Totten Boarding School, and she graduated from Flandreau Indian School, Flandreau, SD.

Her lifetime career as a nurse and care giver began at the Indian School of Practical Nursing, Albuquerque, N.M. She was assigned to Rosebud Indian Hospital of Rosebud, S.D., also, Pine Ridge, S.D, and, Sioux San, Rapid City, S.D. Later, Romona was then transferred to Sisseton Indian Health Service in Sisseton, S.D., where she worked until retirement. After retirement from the Indian Health Service, she worked for Tekakwitha Nursing Center and then Tribal Elderly Program at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribe. We all were very blessed she dedicated 56 years of her life taking care of the people in the Sisseton area. She was the true essence of the meaning, 'Nurse'.

She was united in marriage to Andrew Richter, and was the beloved mother of Rhonda (Brian) Golden, Randy (LaRae) Richter, Andrea Richter and Janeen Richter, proud grandmother of Sean, Aaron, Jordan, Mason, Nick, Amber, Sierra, Taeden, Randy Jr., Noah, Phoenix, Whitney, Ashton, Nathaniel, and JaNiece; also five great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. All who loved her unconditionally.

Those preceded her in death were her parents, brothers and sisters.

She will always be remembered as the most caring, loving, compassionate, humorous, and understanding mother, grandmother, friend, and nurse.
