Obituary

Funeral Service for Robert "Bob" C. German, 89, of Waubay, SD formerly of Sisseton, SD will be held on Saturday, February 28, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at the Peever Lutheran Church, Peever SD with Rev. Steve Moberg and Rev. Janet Miller officiating. Pallbearers will be Robbie, Jason and Jack Cleveland, Chris German, JD and Tim Jorgenson. Honorary Pallbearers will be "all of Bob's Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren." Organist will be Mona Greseth and a duet by Matthew and Gregory Miller. Interment will be in the Zoar Lutheran Cemetery, Grenville, SD, with military rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. There will be visitation on Friday, February 27, 2009 from 1:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD with a 6:00 PM prayer service. The family will be present from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. There will also be visitation one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Robert Clarence German was born on August 19, 1919 in Peever, SD to Henry and Esther (Wren) German Sr. He attended school in Peever. Following his education he farmed with his father before going to Illinois and working in an ammunition plant. He entered the United States Army, serving from December 1941 to October 1945. He received the American Defense Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifleman Badge, 3 Overseas Service Bars, and Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon. He served in the Aleutian Islands, where he risked his life to rescue a pilot who had been shot down, and he received a Bronze Star. After returning from the service Bob worked road construction for S.E. Gustafson in Sioux Falls, SD. Bob was united in marriage to Bernice Kurrasch on July 3, 1950 in Webster, SD. They lived in Sioux Falls for a time before moving to the Sisseton Area. He farmed and worked for Lein Construction and then Knights Construction of Webster until he retired in 1993. Bob and Bernice moved into Waubay in 1997. Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting and teaching his grandchildren new tricks. Bob was a member of Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50. Bob passed away on February 25, 2009 at Lake Area Hospital, Webster, SD.
Robert is survived by three sons, Leo and (Patricia) German of Roslyn, SD, David and (Barbara) German of Brookings, SD, and Gary German of Waubay, SD, three daughters, Bonnie Cleveland of Rosholt, SD, Shirley (David) Wyman and Julie (Kevin) Jorgenson of Waubay, SD one sister Joyce and husband Harley Niles of Waubay, SD, eighteen grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren..
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and four brothers, John, Stanley, Walter and Henry Jr.
