Funeral Service for Richard William Herniman, 85 of Sisseton, SD, will be held Monday, August 15, 2022, at 10:30 A.M.  at Peever Lutheran Church, Peever, SD, with Pastor Sheila Pohl officiating. Organist will be Amy Currence. Recitation  "Deck of Cards" by Wade Johnson. Pallbearers will be Jared Herniman, Matthew Fischer, William Johnson, Travis Schulz, Clint Barber, and Brandon Knutson.  Burial will be at St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, SD, with military rites provided by Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342 of Sisseton. Visitation will be Sunday, August 14, 2022 from 3:00P.M. to 5:00 P.M. at Cahill Funeral Chapel Sisseton. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Richard was born September 5, 1936, at Tekakwitha Hospital in Sisseton to William and Clara (Hoss) Herniman. He grew up on a farm west of Peever and graduated from Peever High School in 1954. Richard married Lois Lohre on October 5, 1959, and was drafted into the Army on October 7, 1959. After basic training, he was stationed in Verdun, France. In the fall of 1961, Richard and Lois purchased a farm northeast of Peever, where they raised their children along with the crops and cattle. Richard farmed with his brother, Merle, for many years until Merle's passing. He also worked for a few years at the ASC office in Sisseton and was a DeKalb dealer. In 1984, Richard and Lois built a new house on the farm and remained there through retirement.  Richard's interests were family, farming, animals, friends, dances, reading a good book, naps, and winning a good game of cards. He ventured to take a trip to England to visit cousins in 2000 with other members of the family.

Richard passed away August 9, 2022, at Coteau des Prairies Hospital in Sisseton, SD surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife, Lois; children, Wesley Herniman (Lori Anderson), Darice (Wade) Johnson, Brenda (Scott) Hansen of Sisseton, SD, Rick (Patty) Herniman of Wilmot, SD, and Maurine (Charles) McLeish of Bixby, OK; grandchildren, Jenny Weinkauf, Jared Herniman (Ricki White), Matthew (Kelsey) Fischer, William Johnson, Morgan Johnson, Chelsea (Travis) Schulz, Heidi (Clint) Barber, Alicia (Jonathan) Tower, Brandon Knutson, Maranda (Richard) Naranjo, and Makenzie McLeish; fifteen great-grandchildren; sisters- and brothers-in-law, Elaine Krone, Phyllis and Roger Gunderson, and Carol Moshier; and several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Clara Herniman; brother, Merle Herniman; sister, Lois Karst, brothers-in-law Joseph Karst and David Moshier; great-granddaughter, Ella Lu Barber; and extended family members.
