Obituary

Graveside Service will be held on September 5, 2020 at 1:30 P.M. at the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD, with lunch to follow at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD.

Celebration of Life Service for Richard E. Aas, 79 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Patrick Jenkins officiating. Organist will be Michelle Greseth. Special music will be by the Grace Lutheran Church Choir and Pat Schubert. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Grace Lutheran Church Family. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD at a later date with Military Rites by the Otto-Quade-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. There will be visitation on Wednesday, February 19, 2020 at the Cahill Funeral Chapel from 2:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Visitation will also be one hour prior to services at the church. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Richard Elmer Aas was born on November 9, 1940 in Sisseton, SD to Elmer and Rosalie (Dickerson) Aas. Richard attended school in Sisseton and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1959. He joined the National Guard in June 1958 and was discharged from the guard on February 23, 1960 when he entered the US Army till May 17, 1963. He received the Good Conduct Medal and Marksman (rifle). Following the service Richard attended Northern State College and received a BS in education in 1967. Richard was united in marriage to Garnette Tasa on August 20, 1967 at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD. Richard and Garnette made their home in Sisseton where Richard taught school. Later he worked at Grace Lutheran Church as financial secretary and custodian and for Sherman Peterson Electric. He worked as an EMTI for Cahill Ambulance, Kareline Ambulance and Grant-Roberts Ambulance Service until 2010. Richard was a member of Grace Lutheran Church where he had served on the Church Council and was part of the Stephen Ministry, taught adult Sunday school and was a member of the church choir. He was a member of the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50. Richard served as a Board Member on the Roberts County Mutual Insurance. His hobbies were reading and running. Richard passed away at his home on February 15, 2020 with his wife by his side after a long battle with cancer.

Richard is survived by his wife Garnette Aas of Sisseton, SD; one son Dana Aas of Sisseton, SD; one grandson Maysen Klienschmidt of Wheaton, MN; seven brothers and sisters, Roger (Sylvia) Aas of Silver City, New Mexico, Karen (Mahylen) Niles of Chamberlain, SD, Robert (Charlene) Aas of Nampa, ID, Linda(Richard) Wike of Billings, Mt, Calvin (Judy) Aas of Sisseton, SD, Judy ( Gary) Gustafson of Minneapolis, MN, Warren (Sue) Aas of Watertown, SD,; one step brother, Stanley Torvik of Colorado and one step sister, Janet ( Donald) Smith of San Tan Valley, AZ; two aunts, Elaine Boswell of Seattle, WA and Ella Hustel of Britton, SD; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his one daughter, Lisa Aas; his parents, Rosalie Aas and Elmer and Doris Aas; his maternal grandparents Harry Dickerson and Beulah Bailly; and paternal grandparents, Edward and Inga (Hustad) Aas.
