Memorial Service for Rex A. Nelson, 93, of Lake City, SD will be held on Monday, June 20, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD with Rev. William Schruba officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be Jerome Moshier, Tom Nelson, SSGT Evan Nelson, and SrA Maria Nelson, and all of Rex's military unit from 164th Infantry, Americal Division. Military rites will be provided by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and the Fort Sisseton V.F.W. Post #3342 with interment in the Sisseton Cemetery. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.

Rex Alden Nelson was born in Eden, SD to Wesley and Lillian (Price) Nelson Sr. on October 3, 1922.
Rex served in WWII as an Army gunner under the 164th Infantry from 1940 until 1943. He was very proud of his military service to his country. He was in basic training at Fort Polk, Louisiana when Pearl Harbor was bombed. His Division was immediately deployed to heavy fighting in the South Pacific. He spent most of his service time in Bougainville, and Guadalcanal. He was proud he got to visit Australia during his service.
Rex married Bernice Bendickson soon after he returned from war. They moved to the farm southwest of Sisseton and farmed with his father until 2008 when he moved to Lake City to live with Dana and Laurie. The couple had four children; Rhonda, Marlon, James, and Dana. Rex was an avid motorcycle man and loved going to Sturgis, SD for the Rallies. He lived for hunting and fishing and spent many years with his best friend, Herman Price searching for geese, ducks, antelope, deer and any other animal or bird that happened to get in their way. Their stories were under the saying… what happened in the hunting field stays in the hunting field.
He lived in Alaska for a summer in 1963 helping his brother Gary, in the logging business and working at heavy equipment mechanics. While he was there he enjoyed hunting and fishing, bear, moose, and huge fish.
Rex came to love Dana's two Pekingese's Romeo and Ozzie. He enjoyed having lap dogs as they kept him warm. One of our fondest memories of Rex will be his concern for their well being.
Throughout his entire life, it was evident that Rex was extremely proud that he served his country. He was a member of the American Legion in Sisseton, SD, and made many trips to North Dakota to visit friends from his old division. Rex lived at the Strand-Kjorsvig nursing home in Roslyn, SD for about two weeks before passing away. He passed away on June 10, 2016 in Britton, SD.
Rex is survived by his daughter Mrs. Rhonda Mckee of Sturgis, SD, three sons, Marlon Nelson of Sisseton, SD, James Nelson of Aniak, AK, Dana (Laurie) Nelson of Lake City, SD, brothers, Tom Nelson of Webster, SD and Gary Nelson of Aniak, AK, grand-daughters, Heather Mckee Anderson of Sturgis, SD, DaNae (Barry) Cordie, and Autumn Nelson of Sioux Falls, SD, Tina Whitmore of Mitchell, SD, Brittany Nelson of Minneapolis, MN, and grandson SSGT Evan (Maria) Nelson of Florence, SD.

Rex was preceded in death by his parents, wife, son-in-law Gary Mckee, two sisters, Holly Schmaus, and Fern Witted, and brother Wesley Nelson Jr. "Winnie".
