Raymond P. Backer, 79, of Sisseton SD passed away on March 9, 2026. There will be a Memorial service on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at the Christian Outreach Center, Sisseton, SD, with Pastor Kirk Snaza officiating. Urn Bearers will be Adam and Tara Backer. Honorary Urn Bearers will be the COC Church Members. Military Rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and FT Sisseton VFW Post #3342. Inurnment will be at the Veterans Section of the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Raymond Pete Backer was born to Norman and Birdella (Paczkowski) Backer on July 30, 1946, in Cayuga, ND. After graduating high school, Raymond enlisted into the United States Army on February 20, 1968, and was honorably discharged on February 10, 1971. During his service, he received the Combat Infantry Badge, Army Commendation Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, 2 06 Bars, and Expert N-14. Raymond married Fern Barse and to this union had their children Tara and Adam. For many years, Raymond worked in the county as a truck driver. He enjoyed fishing, grilling out, exercising, gardening, going to church, reading his bible, visiting with friends, and watching TV. Raymond passed away on March 9, 2026, in Sisseton, SD.

Raymond is survived by his children Tara and Adam Backer; siblings Leon Backer, Jean Gutzmer, Delores Brown, Edward "Bill" Backer, and Yvone Dere; grandchildren Tasha Torkelson, Taran Torkelson, Brent Torkelson, Kylee Backer, Jace Backer, and Justice Backer; and great-grandchildren Gwen Gustafson, Lincoln Backer, and Blayke Breaw.

Raymond is preceded in death by his wife Fern (Barse) Backer; parents Norman and Birdella (Paczkowski) Backer; and siblings Albert Backer, Alvin "Wimpy" Backer, Mary Backer, Rosalie Thompson-Backer, and Ella Backer.
