Traditional Burial Service for Phyllis Joyce Redday-Roberts, Ta Oyate Waŋbdi Hdeṡka "Her Spotted Eagle Nation", 78 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at 1:00 P.M. at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Traditional Burial Ground, Sisseton, SD with Spiritual Leaders Dennis Gill and Mikey Peters, Wake Services will be held at the Sisseton Community College Auditorium, Agency Village, SD on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at 7:00 P.M. with Pastor Morgan Redday, Mike Redday, Orville Looking Horse, John Cloud III, Lynette Bobtail Bear CRE. Wednesday, May 4, 2022 there will be a meal at 5:30 P.M. followed by a Service, and at 7:30 P.M. we will move to the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Traditional Burial Ground. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Red Eagle, Phillip Little Owl, Brian Bartunek, Derrick Redday, Ron LeBeau, David Bird, Westley Redday, Madrid Roberts Jr. Simon Dumarce and Vicktor Robinson. Honorary Pallbearers will be Pte Cante Win Society, Faye Renville, Faith Spotted Eagle, Caroline Blackthunder, Lydia Conito, Russell Smith, Lou Anne Phelps, Sharon Odegard, Marlys Blue Dog, Glen & Gwen Wasicuŋna, Chris Mato Nuŋpa, Mary Beth Faimon, Diane Desrosiers, Tamara St. John, Carol Iron Moccasin, Janice & Dick Albro. Drum Group will be Toka Nuwaŋ. The Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Phyllis Joyce Redday was born on August 14, 1943 at Agency Village, SD to Howard and Josephine "Big Talk" Redday Sr. After the death of her mother, Phyllis at the age of 9 attended school along with her brothers at Wahpeton Indian School. She then returned home to live with her grandmother, Emma Skyman Hill and helped raised her siblings. She graduated from Sisseton High School in 1962. Through her life Phyllis was a mother, teacher and nurse. In 1983 she attended Lake Area Vo Tech and received her LPN nursing degree. She worked in many health care facilities finding her place as a school nurse at Tiospa Zina Tribal School. After serving as a nurse for 18 years she found another calling and returned to Sisseton Wahpeton College and received her degree in Dakota Studies and a Teaching Certificate for Language. Then became a Dakota Language teacher at Tiospa Zina Tribal School.   In the fall of 2013, Phyllis began working at Sisseton Wahpeton College as an instructor for Dakota Language 2 year degree. In 2018 Phyllis focused her efforts on translation of Dakota Text at Dakota Language Institute. In 2019 due to illness she retired. During her life Phyllis was a Cultural Advisor for the Tribal Historic Preservation office, a Pipe carrier for the Women and Children March at Granite Falls, MN. Phyllis also with her cousin Jerry Flute played a vital role in the starting of the Sisseton Wahpeton Repatriation Grounds. She was hand and hand with her sister, Faith Spotted Eagle at Dakota Access Pipeline Protest in Standing Rock, ND. She was an active member of the Buffalo Heart Women Society, Agency Village. Phyllis passed away on May 1, 2022 in the care of the Tekakwitha Living Center Staff.

Phyllis is survived by her six children, Robert (Teresa) Bird of Summit, SD, David ( Carrie) Bird of Browns Valley, MN, Robin Robertson of Sisseton, SD, Susan Robertson of Sisseton, SD, Phyllis (Mike) Roberts of Mandan, ND and Madrid Roberts II of Sisseton, SD; four brothers, Howard Redday, Jr. of Peever, SD, LeRoy Redday of Madison, SD, Morgan (Darlene) Redday of Old Agency, SD and Emmett ( Annette) Redday of Sisseton, SD; four sisters, Maxine (Darrell) Renville of Browns Valley, MN, Betty (Clayton) Redday of Fort Yates, ND, Bonita (Glen) Wilson of Sisseton, SD and Maria ( Brian DeCoteau) Redday of Old Agency, SD; Hunka family, Iris Keoke, Lynette Bobtail Bear, Janelle Many Lightings, Dave Alexander and Tony Wolfe; eight grandchildren, Michael and Christian Robertson, Phillip, Lazarus, and Dawson Roberts and Shirley and Melissa Bird, and Madrid Roberts III and many niece and nephews.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Robert Irvin Bird, Edwin Robertson Sr. and Madrid Roberts, Sr.; one son, Edwin Scott Robertson, Jr.; and one great granddaughter, Louise DeCorah.
