Phillip E. Kaste, 95, of Sisseton, South Dakota, formerly of Dalton, Minnesota passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton, SD. Funeral service for Phillip will be at the Grace Lutheran Church on Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Vern Donnell officiating. Organist will be Ollie Yost and soloist will be Pat Schubert. Pallbearers will be Cody Kaste, Phillip Kaste, Adam Schubert, Charles Cox, Paul Sparks and Gary Glass. Honorary Pallbearers will be Guy Mackner, the Rosholt and Tekakwitha Living Center Staff. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church. He wanted his final celebration of life to be at his favorite annual family gathering…"the Kaste Family Reunion" on June 17, 2017 with Inurnment at the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Ashby, MN. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD is in charge of arraignments.
He was born on February 7, 1922 in Leaf Lake Township, MN to Edwin and Rosine (Allenson) Kaste. Phillip attended school in Henning, Minnesota until going into farming with his father. He met his wife Thelma Knutson while she was an English teacher at the Henning High School. They were married on April 13, 1957.
Phillip was a commercial plumber and worked for Moorhead Plumbing for about 15 years. After that he went back to farming. He farmed on Thelma's grandparents' farm in rural Dalton. He retired in 1996 after macular degeneration made it impossible to continue. He and Thelma lived on the farm until Thelma's untimely death on Christmas Eve of 2003. He then moved to live with his daughter, Pat, in Sisseton, South Dakota. While living there, he met many new friends who were very kind to him.
Phillip enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, farming and building things. He enjoyed attending Sisseton basketball games and going for rides in the country and having coffee with his friend, Guy Mackner.
Phillip is preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; two young daughters, Sonya and Anna; his parents, Edwin and Rosine Kaste; two sisters, Mabel Sparks and husband Clarence, Edna Glass and husband Duane; a brother-in-law, John Maxson and sister-in-law, Joan Cox and husband Tom.
He is survived by 7 children: David (Kim) Kaste of rural Battle Lake, MN, Edwin Kaste of rural Battle Lake, MN, John (Tammie) Kaste of rural Dalton, MN, Pat (Cal) Schubert of Sisseton, SD, Risa Hollis of Little Falls, MN, Julie (Gene) Bjorklund of rural Underwood, MN and Tony Kaste of Stalker Lake, MN; Grandchildren – Heidi (Shawn) Ashfeld, Heather (Chris) Jacobson, and Emily Kaste, Cody (Courtney) Kaste, Cassi (Trent) Kadel, Dillon and Thomas Kaste; Karyn (Ben) Schubert, Alexis and Adam Schubert; Phillip (Amanda) Kaste, Michael Fafara, Gregory Molony and Victoria Johnson, Aann and John Bjorklund; Great-Grandchildren – Morgan, Skylar, Cameron, Eli, Marley, Mason, Peyton, Asher, Parker, Payton, Ashton; Sister-in--law Christine Maxson of Wayzata, MN and numerous nieces and nephews.
