Our mother was born Patricia Mae Monson on Tuesday, May 14th 1935 to Orville J & Frances Mae (Jones) Monson in the Veblen / Sica Hollow area at the Monson family farm and ranch. She was the youngest of 4 children. Her siblings are Irving Monson (Sisseton, SD), Alyce Monson Spooner (Forman, ND) and James (Bud) Monson (deceased).
As a child she attended a country school near to where the family lived named McKinley Township Rural School #1. Those were the days when kids walked across fields to get to school. She had a little dog and even a pet crow. She attended public high school in Sisseton, SD and after graduating moved to Minneapolis, MN for a short time. She decided on a nursing career and chose the nursing program at NDSCS in Wahpeton, ND. After graduating she accepted a nursing internship in Jamestown, ND, and afterwards she was on to Winslow, Arizona to work as a nurse. She eventually moved to Chicago, IL, and after that to Harlan, Iowa, where her eldest brother Irving and his wife were living. When she was 24 years old she moved back to the Veblen, SD area and started working at the hospital there. When the Veblen hospital closed she moved to the Sisseton Community Hospital, known as the Old Hospital around town, and when the new Coteau des Prairies hospital was built she worked there for many many years.
After retiring she moved to Claire City, SD and had a handful of hobbies. The number one hobby of course was selling Avon, which those of you who knew her would attest to. She also enjoyed gardening, country music, photography and spending time with her little dog Fluffy. She loved watching nature and science shows on National Geographic, PBS and the Science Channel and stayed abreast of whatever astronomical phenomena was coming our way, such as a meteor shower or an eclipse. She loved cooking and baking and we'll all miss the lefse she would make every Thanksgiving season. There are too many interests to list here but it should be noted that years ago she had a small part-time business selling house plants which she enjoyed very much. She spoke of it many times.
She finally lost her battle with cancer on the afternoon of Monday October 19, 2015.
The following are her children and grandchildren:
Daniel Monson whose son is Dorian Monson,
Leah Williams whose children are Joshua (deceased) and
Diamond Williams and whose daughter is Saphira Velasquez,
Wade Hofland,
Robert Hofland whose children are Megan and Lyden Hofland,
Lance & Ramona (Kirk) Hofland whose children are Kelsey, Kendra, Kendrick, Kenize (deceased) and Maria Hofland
She will be missed by us all ...
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday October 31, 2015 at 10:30 AM at the Grace Lutheran Church in Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation at the Church one hour prior to the Memorial Service.
