After his education, Orville farmed with his parents and worked for Alvin O'Farrell on the ranch. He was married to Irene Gertsema on November 25, 1951 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Corona, SD. The couple later purchased a farm in Springdale township near Wilmot, SD. They also ran the Wilmot Café and the Summit Café while living in their farm home.

He enjoyed playing baseball, softball, and card games with his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and neighbors. Orville served several years as a Spring Grove Township Supervisor, taught Sunday School, and was also a church elder. He loved all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; and enjoyed laughing and telling jokes with them. A recent favorite, was joking with those who referred to him as "a farmer" – instructing them that he was not just a farmer, but instead he was "an Agricultural Engineer."
