Obed Wallace Oetken's Obituary
Funeral Service for Obed Wallace Oetken, 87 of Browns Valley, Minnesota will be held on Friday, April 9, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. at the Claire City Community Hall, Claire City, SD with Ministers Craig Winquist and Alan Poppendorf officiating. Pianist will be Marian Fryer with special music by Marjan and Skye Schwartz. Pallbearers will be Walter Erickson, Charlie Erickson, Brent Slotten, Paul Bergh, Clinton Ellingson, Kevin Larsen, Dale Jensen and Lloyd Hanssen. Honorary Pallbearers will be "All of Obed's Friends. Interment will be in the Spring Valley Cemetery, Claire City, SD. There will be visitation on Thursday, April 8. 2010 from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel. There will be visitation on Friday, one hour prior to the funeral service at the Hall in Claire City.
Obed Wallace Oetken was born March 22, 1923 in Sisseton, SD. He was the son of George and Stella (Kuck) Oetken. He grew up and attended school at Bossko Township #3. Obed had two brothers serving in the military, so he received a deferral to help his father on the family farm in the early 1940's. On November 21, 1947 he married June Weaver in Austin, Texas. They lived on the family farm until 1951 at which time they purchased the Rasmus Bendickson farm by the Claire City Road. The couple farmed there until 1988 when they built a home by Lake Traverse. Obed enjoyed his farm, feeding cattle, traveling to many countries, fishing and hunting. Even after moving to Lake Traverse he would find his way back to the farm often visiting neighbors along the way and sharing his fruit crop. Obed passed away on April 3, 2010 at the Browns Valley Health Center, Browns Valley, MN.
Obed is survived by his wife, June of 62 years of Browns Valley ,MN; one son, John Oetken of Sisseton, SD; one daughter, Jane Lull of Mesa, AZ; five grandchildren and one sister Alice Oetken of McAllen, TX,
Obed was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Walter, George, Owen and Henry; and three sisters, Margaret Erickson, Eleanor Vogt, and Olive Eickman.
