Norbert was born October 8, 1921 in Marshall County near Eden, SD to Frank and Katherine (Vogel) Steiner. He attended a small country school and completed two years of high school in Eden before having to quit to help on the family farm. He was drafted into the Army in October 1942 and served until January 1946 serving as a medic in Guam during World War II. Norbert then married Fidelis Keintz on June 3, 1947 and moved to Sisseton where they farmed and raised livestock. He kept very detailed accounting records of his farming operation and was an all-around handy man doing his own equipment repairs and carpentry work. Norbert was a quiet man who lived a simple life. He enjoyed visiting with neighbors during his years on the farm, and often in the evenings would play his accordion and harmonica or a game of solitaire. He loved his sweets and if there was no dessert after a meal would have to have a piece of bread with homemade jelly. One thing Norbert will always be remembered for in his later years was his love of Hershey candy bars and Whoppers. Norbert and Fidelis moved to the Jard Apartments in 2006. During retirement he enjoyed doing word search books, so gift buying for him became easy—Hershey candy bars, Whoppers, Mt. Dew and word search books. Norbert was active in St. Peters Catholic Church and a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Norbert passed away on August 6, 2015 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD.
