Obituary

Funeral Service for Miriam May Backman, 87 formerly of Wilmot, SD will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at the Peever Lutheran Church, Peever, SD with the Rev. Sheila Pohl officiating. Organist will be Kim Lawrence. Interment will be in the Taylor City Cemetery, Taylor, TX at later date. There will be visitation on Friday, January 16, 2015 at Peever Lutheran Church from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Miriam May Stubbe was born on November 10, 1927 in Wilmot, SD to Herb and Agnes (Dikstaal) Stubbe. She grew up and attended Lee #3 country school by Wilmot through the 8th grade. Following her education, she lived and worked at her parents home until she was united in marriage to Jens Backman on March 20, 1946 in Wilmot, SD. Two children were raised in this union. Jens and Miriam farmed near Wilmot. Starting in the early 1970's, Miriam worked at the Wilmot Nursing Home as a cook and aide. During that time, she also attended classes at Lake Area Technical School in Watertown, where she completed her CNA certification. She then started working at the Browns Valley Nursing Home. The couple moved in 1979 to Taylor, Texas. Miriam worked at the Taylor Hospital. Jens passed away on March 19, 2002. In 2009, due to health reasons, Miriam moved back to South Dakota to be closer to family. Miriam liked to knit, crochet, sew, paint and bake. In later years, she enjoyed coffee with her friends at McDonalds and trips to Sonic and the "Chicken Place." Miriam passed away on January 13, 2015 at the Tekakwitha Living Center, Sisseton, SD.
Miriam is survived by two children, Sharlene Evans of Littleton, CO and Dale and wife, Marilyn Backman of Sisseton SD; two brothers, Harold Stubbe of Milbank, SD and Clifford and wife, Edna Stubbe of Evergreen, Alabama; two sisters-in-law, Viola Taylor of Watertown, SD, and Eunice Berwald of Toronto, SD; three brothers-in-law, Leon and wife, Gladys Backman of Sisseton, SD, Don and wife, June Backman of Wilmot, SD, and Leon Eneboe of Sisseton, SD; two granddaughters, Jennifer and husband, Austin DeBrito of Colorado Springs, CO and Melissa and husband, Collin Hegerle of Fargo, ND; one grandson, Travis Backman and fiancée LeeAnn Horath of Sisseton, SD; and five great grandchildren Dylan, Kayla, Aiden, Avery and Abigail.
Miriam was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother Rudy; five sisters-in-law Arlene Binde-Stubbe, Marlys Ballhagen, Norma Madsen, Marlene Eneboe, and Pearl Ammann; five brothers-in-law, Floyd Ammann, Earl Madsen, Melvin Ballhagen, Eddie Taylor and Arlen Berwald; son-in-law John Evans and one grandson, Jason Evans.
