Private Family Funeral Service for Michael S. Brantseg, 58, of Sisseton, SD will be Saturday, February 6, 2021 at Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton, SD. Rev. Suzie Benidt will be officiating. Public visitation will be Friday, February 5, 2021, 2:00 P.M. till 5:00 P.M. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel in Sisseton, SD (family will not be present). Interment will be at Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Masks and social distancing are required. The Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. The service will be video and posted on Michaels website following the funeral service.

A Spring outdoor Celebration of Life is being planned.

Mike was a brave man and it was his nature to face challenges head on and with determination. It was with this attitude he dealt with his cancer diagnosis as well. He did what he had to do with dignity and courage. Mike channeled his spirit into everything he did in life, which led him to accomplish so many things. He was born and grew up in Sisseton, South Dakota. He loved his summers living at Clear Lake waterskiing, fishing, and driving the boat around. He and his Dad loved hunting together in the fall and golfing together in the summer. Archery was another sport that he had a passion for since he was young and was recently rekindled. This led him to beautifully crafting his own bows, which he was very proud of. Mike started martial arts training at the age of 8, which eventually led him into Tae Kwon Do, where he trained and achieved 5th Degree Black Belt. A highlight was competing and winning first place in two events at the World Championships in Las Vegas, NV. In 1988 Mike earned his private pilot license and went on to earn an instrument and commercial pilot rating and became a flight instructor. This love of flying drove him to build his own RV7 airplane, persevering over a 10 year period. In 2013 he flew his plane to the Oshkosh Air show and entered the competition. He and his plane won the award for Outstanding Workmanship. Flying his plane was one of his greatest joys and places of peace. Along with his building skills, Mike was an accomplished artist in a Realism style, with nature as his specialty. He leaves behind many beautiful works of art.

Mike loved athletics and lettered in football, track and basketball at Sisseton High School. He also was crowned Homecoming King his senior year. After two years at Alexandria Tech, he moved to California in 1985, where he was a fitness and Tae Kwon Do instructor, eventually opening his own Tae Kwon Do school. His other job was cabinet making. Any project that required customizing and fine details were sure to land in his hands. Mike loved his family and countless friends both in California and in the Midwest. Spending time together eating good food, telling stories, laughing and sharing his wonderful sense of humor were some of his best times. He had traveled to Hawaii, China, Taiwan, Ireland, Scotland and South Korea and had friends that came from all parts of the world. Mike lived a life that many dream of and the legacy he leaves is one of acceptance of all people, kindness, peacefulness, and love of people and nature.

Michael is survived by his father Wallace R. Brantseg of Sisseton; siblings Richard (Sue) Brantseg of New Brighten, MN, Karen (Richard) Haring of New Brighton, MN, Steve (Merrie) Brantseg of Minneapolis, MN, and Patrick (Aimee) Brantseg of Plymouth, MN; 6 nieces and nephews, Robert and Thomas Brantseg, Jenna and Daniel Haring, Iris and Kate Brantseg; aunts, Donna Wolfe-Sholes, Joan Anderson and Marlene Freeman.

Michael was preceded in death by his mother Muriel; paternal grandparents Helmer and Nora Brantseg; maternal grandparents Earl and Ethel Felton.
