Obituary

Funeral services for Melvin Hovland, 91, of Sisseton, SD, will be held on Sunday, July 7, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. at the Family Life Assembly of God church in Sisseton, SD, with Pastor Richard Grorud officiating. Special music will be provided by Todd Erickson, Lucille Crooks, Linda Long, Irene Hanson and organists will be Gloria Slaamot and Linda Long. Pallbearers will be Paul and Dale Griepp, Larry Crooks, Dan Elmquist, Calvin Hills, and Irv Slaamot. Honorary pallbearers will be the Sisseton Gideon Camp and the Grandchildren. Interment will be at the Bethel One Road Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation on Saturday, July 6, 2013, from 2:00 PM until 7:00 PM with family present from 5:00 to 7:00 with a 7:00 service of remembrance.
Melvin was born on July 30, 1921, on the family farm in One Road Township, rural Sisseton, SD to John and Inga (Hyllseth) Hovland. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethel Lutheran Church. After his education he ran the family farm. Melvin also attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in Seattle, WA, and Minneapolis, MN. He was married to Eleanore Brekke on June 13, 1964, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. They returned to the family farm where they lived and raised their four children. Melvin was an active member of the Saron and Buffalo Lake Lutheran Churches. He was a longtime member of the Gideon's, the One Road Township board, and the Pickeral Lake Bible Camp board. Melvin loved to visit, read, garden, and listen to music. He was a devoted husband for 49 years to Eleanore, a loving father and grandfather, and was faithful to his Lord to the very end. He passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.
He is survived by his wife, Eleanore, of Sisseton, SD, four children; Elaine (Greg) Bownik of Rogers, MN, Judy (Scotie) Bellefy of Roseau, MN, Joyce (Todd) Erickson of Roseau, MN, and David Hovland of Sisseton, SD; one sister; Mrs. Ardyce Elmquist of Watertown, SD; thirteen grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Thorlief, and five sisters, Sophie, Jofrid, Jeanette, Julia, and Alice.
