Obituary

Funeral Mass for Maurice J. "Pete" Rabenberg, 88, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Wednesday , April 12, 2017 at 10:30 A.M. at the St. Peter's Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. Fr. Jerome Ranek Celebrant and  organist will be Cindy Marohl and song leader Sandi Jaspers. Pallbearers will be LeRon Knebel, Louie Johnson, Curtis Bissonette, CeeJay Bissonette, David Rabenberg, Harry Moshier, Jay Tasa and Stan Hippen. Honorary Pallbearers will be Former Students and Co-workers from the Sisseton School District and all of Pete's Friends and Relative, Members of the Chris and Shirley Johnson and LeRoy and Louella Quinn families. Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 11, 2017 from 3:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD. Military Rites by Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton Veteran of Foreign Wars Post #3342.   Interment will be in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Artesian, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Maurice Jerome "Pete" Rabenberg was born on April 4 th , 1929 in Lennox, SD. He passed away on April 9 th , 2017 following a lengthy battle with dementia. Pete graduated from Lennox High School, received a Bachelor of Science degree from Sioux Falls College, and a Master's degree in Education from South Dakota State University. Pete was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1951 – 1953 during the Korean Conflict. He married Elizabeth McKillop from Artesian, SD on June 23 rd , 1955, and together they raised five sons.

Educating young people was a driving force in Pete's life. He began his career teaching in Baltic, Rutland, and Colton, SD. He was school superintendent at Chester, SD from 1961-67, and at Sisseton from 1967 until his retirement in 1989. Governor Nels Boe appointed him to the 1 st Human Relations Board in South Dakota. Following Pete's retirement, Governor Bill Janklow appointed him to 2 terms on the State Board of Education.   He chaired the South Dakota Administrators Association in 1972. He served as Commander of American Legion posts in Rutland and Sisseton, SD.

Pete loved the outdoors. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping with his sons and friends in northeast South Dakota. Some of Pete's favorite times were spent at the family cabin on Red Iron Lake and at his son Pat's farm during calving time. He loved bowling, spending time and playing with his grandkids.

Maurice was preceded in death by his parents Jerry and Tressa (Neeman) Rabenberg, and his brother Victor Rabenberg.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth; sons Michael (Jane) from Bismarck, ND, Patrick from Sisseton, SD, Richard (Shellie) from Cave Creek, AZ, Douglas from Manor, TX and William (Anna) from Manor, TX; a nephew Russell Rabenberg from Parker, SD; brother-in-law Dan (Carol) McKillop from Gillette, WY and their families; 6 grandchildren Shanda (Curtis) Bissonette from Sisseton, Laura Ericson from Billings, MT, David (Kendra) Rabenberg from Great Falls, MT, Briana Rabenberg from Fargo, ND, Rachael and Henry Rabenberg from Manor, TX; Shanda and Briana's mother Pam Quinn; and 4 great grandchildren CeeJay, Kennadee and Kyler Bissonette from Sisseton and baby girl Rabenberg from Great Falls, MT who will arrive in late April.
