Funeral Service for Mary Lou Nieland, 88 of Fargo, ND, formerly of Sisseton, SD will be held on Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 2:00 P.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Joshua Knudsen officiating. Organist will be Michelle Greseth with special music by Timothy Peters. Pallbearers are Joe Schneider, Joe Huseby, Steve McCleerey, Matt Jones, Scott Nelson and Tom McCormick. Honorary Pallbearers are her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, brother, nieces, nephews and all family and friends. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church.
Mary Lou (Tasa) Nieland passed away on January 7, 2023 at Eventide Senior Living Communities, peacefully surrounded by family. Mary was born on June 3, 1934 to Carl and Viola (Negaard) Tasa in Sisseton, SD where she grew up and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1952.
After graduation, she landed her first job as a typist and commercial artist at Reinhart's in Minneapolis, MN, where she worked for several years.
At Lake Calhoun, Mary met Karl Nieland and they wed on October 8, 1955. In 1961, they moved to Sisseton, SD where they owned and operated the Holiday Motel and Holiday Service Station for many years. Mary and Karl had four children, Jim, Judy, Joe and Jane. After Karl passed away in 1998, Mary moved to Fargo, ND soon thereafter.
Mary was a talented artist who enjoyed painting, ceramics, decorating and woodworking. She was also an avid collector of many things including antiques, coins and various figurines.
Mary is survived by her children Judith (Tom) McCormick, Fargo ND; Joel (Treva) Nieland, Rapid City SD; Jane Greminger, Fargo ND; daughter-in-law Joni (James) Nieland, Redwood Falls, MN; grandchildren Karl LeClair, Fargo, ND; Joshua Nieland, Safety Harbor, FL; Nicole (Joe) Huseby, Redwood Falls, MN; Derek Nieland, Rapid City, SD; Melissa (Matt) Jones, Rapid City, SD; Mary Greminger, Fargo, ND; great-grandchildren Chloe and Carson LeClair, Fargo, ND; Alexis, Callie and Emily Huseby, Redwood falls, MN; Daisy Patel, Fargo, ND; and brother Douglas Tasa, Coon Rapids, MN.
Mary was predeceased by her husband Karl; son James; grandchildren Lance LeClair and Amanda Nieland; parents Carl and Viola Tasa; and sisters Myra Week and Carol Peters.
