Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, November 14,2011 at 10:30 AM at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation on Sunday, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM at the Cahill Funeral Chapel and will continue at St. Peter's Catholic Church at 6:00 PM followed by a Scripture Service at 7:00 PM. Marshall passed away on November 10, 2011 at the Browns Valley Health Care Center, Browns Valley, MN.
Sisseton, South Dakota. – Marshall Douglas Flannery Sr., 85, of Sisseton, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011. Marshall is survived by his devoted wife of 63 years, Marlene (Schmaus) Flannery; his loving children: Cheryl (Larry) Wegener of Davenport, Iowa, Christal Flannery of Sisseton, Marshall Douglas (Diane) Flannery Jr. of Sisseton, Jeannette (Herb) Mundt of Watertown, SD, Randy (Debra) Flannery of Isanti, MN, RoxAnn (Douglas) Mills of Watertown, SD, Patricia (Keith) Baldwin of Montevideo, MN, George (Joseph Mollica) Flannery of Burnsville, MN and a sister Lorna Hanes of Sisseton, SD, one son-in-law Dave McFarland and one-daughter-in-law Lori Flannery of Gwinner, ND.
Marshall has thirty- three grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren of whom he was so proud, Marshall was predeceased by a daughter, Karen McFarland, a son John Flannery, a brother George Flannery, a sister Kathleen Wells a grandson Mark McFarland, great grandsons Darius Flannery and Hayden Renville.
Marshall was born in Peever, South Dakota on March 11, 1926, the son of the late George and Margaret Flannery and he lived in Peever and Sisseton most of his life. He proudly served his country during WWII in the United States Navy, serving on the U.S.S. Gilmer that performed antisubmarine screening assignments for convoys bound from the Philippines to Okinawa. After the U.S.S. Gilmer completed additional voyages along the China coast it sailed to the United States where Marshall subsequently received an honorable discharge for his service while at San Diego, CA. Marshall then worked at Standard Oil of San Diego returning to Peever, SD where he met Marlene Schmaus whom he later married on August 28, 1948.
Marshall held various jobs driving gravel trucks, buses, propane trucks and was a top salesman and delivery man for Old Home Bread for over twenty years. He then drove gravel trucks until 1984 when he opened a taxi cab company and later managed the VFW Post #3342 of Sisseton and until recently served as Vice Commander of the American Legion Post #50 of Sisseton where he served on the honor guard and completed a variety of remodeling improvement projects.
Marshall's hobbies included wood working, reading and collecting scale model cars. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
