Marlene K. Flannery, 87, of Sisseton, SD passed away on February 8th, 2019 at her home in Sisseton, SD. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at 10:30 AM at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton, SD with coffee, and cake served afterwards in St. Peters Hall. Officiating is Rev. Fr. Jerry Ranek. Organist is Cindy Marohl, and song leader is Sandi Jaspers, with special music by Carissa Metz, Alexis Metz, Carter Metz, and Kaeden Metz. Pallbearers will be Marshall Flannery Jr, Marshall Flannery III, Randy Flannery, George Flannery, Ryan Flannery, and Dennison Lehrke. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Marlene's grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. There will be visitation on Tuesday, February 12, 2019 from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Cahill Funeral Chapel and from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a prayer service at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Interment will be at the St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of funeral arrangements.
Marlene Kathryn Schmaus was born on January 12, 1932 in Roman, MT to Bennie and Emily Schmaus. She passed away on Friday, February 8th, 2019 while in the presence of her family. She lived in the Buffalo Lake area on various farms attending country schools through the seventh grade. Her family then moved to Sisseton where she attended the Sisseton Public School.
Marlene then married Marshall Flannery on August 28th, 1948 in Sisseton, SD. To this union ten children were born and raised; Marlene was a full-time homemaker until she started work at Tekakwitha Nursing Center in December, 1965. After 28 years, Marlene attended and graduated from the first GED class offered in Sisseton. She worked all her years as a Certified Nurse Aide and Medication Aide retiring after 34 years.
Marlene was a devout Catholic and prayer was an important aspect of her life. Over the years, she served on the St. Peters Catholic Church Ladies' Auxiliary and was a member of the American Legion Post #50 Ladies' Auxiliary. She enjoyed baking, cooking, puzzles, collecting souvenir spoons, reading, Sudoku, country music, and visiting with family and friends. She enjoyed traveling with her sister-in-law Lorna Hanes to Hawaii, Colorado and other fun destinations.
Marlene is survived by her loving children: Cheryl (Larry) Wegener of Anamosa, Iowa, Christal Flannery of Sisseton, Marshall Douglas (Diane) Flannery Jr. of Sisseton, Jeannette (Herb) Mundt of Watertown, SD, Randy (Debra) Flannery of Cambridge, MN, RoxAnn (Douglas) Mills of Watertown, SD, Patricia (Keith) Baldwin of Montevideo, MN, George (Joseph) Flannery of Burnsville, MN. She is survived by brothers Merle (Sharon) Schmaus of South St. Paul, MN, Bud Schmaus of Granite Falls, MN, sisters Audrey Bucklin of Peever, SD, LeeAnn (Terry) Kirk of Ortonville, MN, Debbie (Rick) Birdsall of Watson, MN. Marlene was blessed with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Marlene was predeceased by her husband Marshall Flannery, parents, Bennie and Emily, sister Sharon Moe, daughter, Karen McFarland, son John Flannery, grandson Mark McFarland, grandson Timothy VanHeel, and great grandsons Darius Flannery and Hayden Renville.
