Funeral Service for Marlene H. Campbell, 85, of Sisseton, SD will be held at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD on Monday, April 9, 2018 at 2:00 PM with Venverale Paul Sneve, Fr. Charles Chan, John Cloud III Senior catechist and Fr. Conrad Ciesel officiating. Pianist will be Becky Williams and Billy Kohl. Honorary Pallbearers will be James Genia, Ronald Rondell, Raymond Rouillard, Tolly Estes, Iver Cloud Sr., Ronald D. Campbell, John Cloud III and Jeremy Sisk. There will be Wake Services on Saturday, April 7, 2018 and Sunday, April 8, 2018 (all night) starting at 7:00 PM at the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate Tribal Community Center. Interment will be at the Goodwill Presbyterian Cemetery, Agency Village, SD.  In lieu of flowers memorials may be sent to Sisseton High School c/o Michelle Greseth, 516 8 ^th Ave. West, Sisseton, SD 57262. Please specify for the local Special Olympics or local Special Education Fund.  The Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangments.

Marlene Helen (Cloud) Campbell

Marlene was born on May 22, 1932 in Sisseton, South Dakota to Bessie (Derby) and John Cloud I. Marlene attended elementary classes at a country school on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation.  She completed the eighth grade at St. Mary's School for Indian Girls in Springfield, SD. Marlene graduated from Flandreau Indian High School, Flandreau, SD in 1949.  After attending Huron College she enrolled in classes from the University of Colorado at Pine Ridge, SD.  In 1977 Marlene obtained her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD.  In 1979 Marlene graduated with a Masters of Arts Degree in Early childhood and Special education, University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD. In 1990 she  received her Doctoral Study, Education Administration, University of South Dakota, Vermillion, SD.

Marlene H. Cloud was married to Ronald A. Campbell on December 31, 1952 in Huron, SD. In 1955, Marlene was a Child Care Worker at the Pierre Indian School, Pierre, SD. 1976-1977 she was a Dakota Language Instructor, Vermillion High School, Vermillion, SD. 1977-1980 she was a faculty member at USD, Vermillion, SD; the Head Start Program. 1980-1988 Marlene was the Special Education Teacher at the West Side Elementary School in Sisseton, SD. 1988-1991 she was the Dean of Instruction/Register at the Sisseton Wahpeton Community College, Sisseton, SD.   She was presented in 1991 the Certificate of Achievement by the Board of Trustees for exceptional Performance. For six weeks in the summer of 1992 Marlene was one of three American Educators chosen to go to the tiny Baltic State called Lithuania.  Where they taught the Lithuanian teachers all about the Special Education Program.  Marlene had co-authored the publication, "Realities and Visions", Seabury Press, 1977.

Honors and Awards Marlene received: Who's Who Among the Sioux, 1988; Native American Educational Advancement Scholarship, 1979; Bureau of Indian Affairs Scholarship, 1978; Educational Personnel Development Fellowship, Bilingual Education, 1977; South Dakota Education Association, Humanitarian Award, 1977.

Marlene was a member of: Association for the Education of Young Children; South Dakota Indian Education Association; ECW-Episcopal Church Woman; League of Women Voters; Zenith Club; Jycettess; Legion Auxiliary; Boetheens (Sorority).

Marlene loved the challenge of teaching at all grade levels. She also liked to bake especially pies of all kinds. Marlene liked drinking hot tea while watching the sunrise.  Marlene liked to feed and watch all the wildlife around her home.  She liked cutting out newspaper articles and saving them. Marlene's favorite color was Red.

Marlene summaries her attitude toward her specialized work;

"The future of our reservations depends on the children we raise to maturity. It is like standing in a flower garden which has tremendous beauty of color and variety, nothing is duplicated but the environment, social and otherwise has its effects. In a honor of thunder and storms, some children may stand solid and others may even slumber.  Like wild flowers when touched, some may wither and weep.  Some especially may need tender loving care.  Some may be beautiful to look at but watch out for they have thorns.  The garden is beautiful in the eyes of the Creator.  It is our hands and minds that will nurture these children to the end."

Marlene is survived by her eight children; Ronald (Colleen) Campbell, Enemy Swim, SD, Roger Campbell of Louisville, KY, Rhonda (David) Tiedeman, Sisseton, SD, Robin (Smokey) Bowen, Louisville, KY, Ronnette (Dan) Hulm, Webster, SD, Raenelle Marsh, Anaheim, CA, Rachelle Thompson, Louisville, KY, Dawn Torres, Sioux Falls, SD; She has 39 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren; she also has many, many nephews and nieces.

Marlene is preceded in death by her husband, The Very Rev. Ronald A. Campbell; her parents Bessie (Derby) and John Cloud I; two sisters, Harriet Rondell and Pansy Genia; two brothers, Iver Cloud Sr. and John Cloud II; one son, Chad A. Campbell; her cousin and good friends Lydia and Glen Goodsell.
