Obituary

Funeral Service for Marcus Michael Hayes, Hoksina Wastena Zi,  "Sweet Yellow Boy", 43,  of Sisseton, SD will be held on Thursday, June 22, 2023 at 1:00 P.M. at St. Kateri's Hall, Sisseton, SD with Gerald Heminger Jr. CRE officiating.  Pall bearers will be Jesse Thompson, Troy Greeley, Peyton Bernard, Stephan Hayes, Juan Soto and Jeremy Brown.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Daryl Kelly, Brad Heinecke, Freeman Hawk, Brent Starr, Sid Wanna, Carson LaBatte, Tyson LaBatte, Reno Greeley, BJ Hill, Waylon Brown, Kenny Morsette, John One Road, Maurice Redday Jr., Marky Thompson Jr., Patrick Quinn, Shilo Renville, Duran Renville, Grady & Shobe Renville, Travis Renville, Damon White, Eugene Bissonette, Steve & Johanna, Jack & Faustine, Desean Antell-Bernard, Wayne & Karlisa, J.Garret Renville, Victor Kampeska, Ryder Dirstseller, Mike Selvage Jr.,  Kateri DuMarce, Patricia Nerison, Elsie Williams, Lucinda Runnels, Sara Runnels, Dawn Ryan, Ladean Wanna, Linda Renville, Darnell Hart, Billie Renville, Vanessa Carlson, Josie Bertsch, Amy Wilson, Janet Brown, Shylo LaFontaine, and all the SK's you know who you are. There will be an all night Wake Service on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00P.M. at St. Kateri's Hall. Interment will be in the Ascension Presbyterian Cemetery, Big Coulee.  The Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Marcus Micheal (Roy) Hayes was born on October 30, 1979 in Sisseton, South Dakota to Gail Lynnette Roy of Oklahoma City and Elden Hayes of Peever, South Dakota. Marcus grew up going to school at Tiospa Zina and Pierre Indian Learning Center. He spent his high school years at TZ and Roosevelt High school in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where he played basketball and football. When schooling was finished, he returned back to Sisseton where he was employed at different places such as the Dakota Magic Casino and the Dakota Connection Casino. Marcus was baptized at the Big Coulee Presbyterian church in Big Coulee, South Dakota. Marcus loved basketball, playing pool with friends, being outside for cookouts, and bonfires but he loved being with family and friends.

Marcus is survived by his children, Keely DuMarce of Watertown, SD, Peyton Bernard of Sisseton, SD, Drew and Blake Bernard of Sisseton, SD; his significant other Leanna Bernard of Sisseton, SD, beloved grandson Kai Henning of Watertown, SD; three brothers, Jesse (Elizabeth) Hayes of Watertown, SD, Stephan Hayes and Alden Hayes Jr. of Agency Village, SD; sisters Gwendolyn (Jeffrey) Stiles from Davenport, IA, and Karen Hayes of SD; special nieces Sherece and Miya Jones; nephew Steven Jones Jr.; numerous Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Nieces and Nephews.

Marcus was preceded in death by his father Elden and mother Gail; brother Arron Dover; his uncle Robin Roy; maternal grandmother Doris A. Roy and Maternal grandfather Joseph P. Roy II; paternal grandmother Karen Hayes and paternal grandfather Joe White.
