Funeral Service for Lyle W. Farmen, 84 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. William Schruba officiating. Organist will be Mona Greseth and special music by Tim Farmen, Steve Eneboe and Pat Schubert. Pallbearers will be Clayton Farmen, Dale Farmen, Jacob Farmen, John Farmen, Sean Sullivan, Jeff Taffe, Todd Safgren and James Resser. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Staff at Tekakwitha Living Center, Leon Eneboe, Dennis Jensen, Milton Rolstad, Scott Rolstad, Bryce Rolstad and Theron Rolstad. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD with Military Rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. There will be visitation on Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at the Cahill Funeral Chapel from 3:00 PM TO 7:00 PM with family present from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM. There will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 PM. There will be visitation at the Church on Thursday, one hour prior to the Funeral Service.
Lyle was born on May 29, 1930 to John J. and Millie Pearl (Johnson) Farmen in Enterprise Township, Roberts County, South Dakota. He attended Enterprise Township #3 Country School through the 8th grade. Lyle entered the United States Army in June 1955 and served until February 1956. Lyle received his GED while in the service. Following his return home from the service, Lyle was united in marriage to Carol Odden on September 15, 1956 at Goodwill Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD. They lived on and farmed the Farmen farm. He worked for Art Sather Insurance for two years. In 1970 he built a building and started American Family Insurance, where he worked for the next twenty six years. He also at the same time was a substitute mail carrier for nine years, and then in November of 1996 he became a rural mailer carrier and worked for the next five years. In 2009 he and Carol moved into Sisseton. Lyle entered the Tekakwitha Living Center on May 27, 2014. Lyle was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served on church council, an usher, and a Sunday School Teacher. Lyle served on the Sisseton Cemetery Board for many years. He was a member of the American Legion Post #50 and NARFE. He loved carpenter work, painting and keeping up the farmstead and doing yard work. Lyle passed away on August 30, 2014 at the Tekakwitha Living Center surrounded by his wife of fifty seven years and his son, Tim and wife, Susan.
Lyle is survived by his wife, Carol Farmen of Sisseton, SD; one son, Tim and his wife, Susan Farmen of Sisseton, SD; four grandchildren, Jacob and wife, Kate Farmen of Brookings, SD, John Farmen, Kiersten Farmen and Kaitlyn Farmen all of Sisseton, SD; one great granddaughter, Amelia Jean Farmen of Brookings, SD; two nephews, Clayton and wife, Janet Farmen of Wahpeton, ND and Dale and wife, Julee Farmen of Katy, Texas; four sisters-in-law, Mary Lou Johnson of Fargo, ND, Doris Taffe of Graceville, MN, Verle and husband, Gordon Safgren Park Rapids, MN, and Vicki and husband, Virgil Carlson of Watertown, SD; numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Lyle was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Kenneth Farmen.
