Obituary

There will be a graveside memorial service for Luella Jean Bettermann at the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD, on July 21, 2026, at 11:00 A.M.

Luella Jean Bettermann was called home to be with the Lord on October 22, 2025. She was born to Ralph and Violet (Johnston) Ruckdaschel, the third of ten children, and raised on the family farm near Claire City, South Dakota. Luella attended a one room school house, Norway 5, through the 8th grade, then had to move to Sisseton, SD to board, work, and attend high school. She graduated in 1954 from Sisseton High School and accepted work as a waitress at Legion Lake Resort, SD, where she met her future husband, Louis D. Bettermann, who was serving in the Air Force. They were married on January 22, 1955 in Claire City, SD. They relocated to PA the same year and eventually settled in Sarver, PA where they raised their family.

They had three children, Dr. Denise Bettermann of Mars, PA; Mark (Rosemary) Bettermann of Beaverton, OR; and Victoria (Greg) Weidner of Upper Burrell, PA. Her children would like to say, "Thanks mom for your unceasing love and devotion. You gave us a wonderful, Godly example, always living a life of hope and joy. We will never forget your smile or your loving embrace."

Luella was very active in church ministry and had a gift for evangelism. She enjoyed old style Country Music and Blue Grass and her favorite hymn was 'Softly and Tenderly' and her favorite song was 'Spanish Eyes'. She was a creative artist and made hand-painted greeting cards for her loved ones that are cherished by all. She was also well known for her baking talents, especially her pies. Her special love and gift was dress design.

Luella remained very close with all of her siblings and made annual trips to her roots in South Dakota for family reunions. Luella and Louis retired to the Village of Tippery, PA where they lived for 30 years until the need for personal care brought them back to Sarver. The family would like to thank all of the caregivers from Quality Life Services of Sarver and from Rosebrook who have provided love and care for the past two years.

Luella is survived by her husband of 70 years, their 3 children, 4 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 4 great step-grandchildren and 6 siblings.
