Funeral Service for Luciel Shirley Violet Kohl, "Caŋupa Yuha Mani Wiŋ""Walks with a Pipe Woman", 19, of Canton, South Dakota will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023 starting at 11:30 A.M. with a meal, followed by a giveaway and services at 1:00 P.M. at the Sisseton-Wahpeton Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD with Pastor Nippy Owen, Dickie Johnson, Jacob LaBlanc and Frank Barse officiating. Drum Group will be Old Agency, Pianist Billy Kohl and special music Butch Felix. Pall Bearers will be Luke Johnson, John "Herm" Lincoln, Billy Canku Jr., Riley Bravebull, Alonzo West, Kendrick "Kenbob" Mireau, Greg Zephier III, Jerome Renville Jr., Francis Kohl and Bradley Kohl, Honorary Pall Bearers will be Hayzil Yellow Fox, Tate Frazier, Dani Hamilton, Dayton "Day Day" Snow, Dawn Baxter, Kyeauna Schmit, Danielle Hopkins, Tim Hardy, Kesia Snow, Jesse Bein, Jessica Renville, Violet Barse, Zoey Z Firesteel, and all her volleyball and basketball teammates. There will be a Wake Service on Monday, June 19, 2023 starting at 7:00 P.M. and an All Night Wake on Tuesday, June 20, 2023 starting at 7:00 P.M. at the Sisseton-Wahpeton Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD. Interment will be in the Buffalo Lake Presbyterian Cemetery, Eden, South Dakota.
Luciel Shirley Violet Kohl was born to Ashley Johnson and Joseph Kohl Jr. on April 3, 2004, in Sisseton, SD. Luciel, also known as "Lucy", went to Flandreau Indian School. During her time at Flandreau Indian School , Lucy was a Prom junior princess when she was in the 11th grade. In the 12th grade she was crowned Prom Senior Princess. She graduated in 2023. She had just started working at Keystone Treatment Center as a medication aide to learn about medications and how the nursing world worked prior to attending the University of South Dakota for an LPN nursing license. She loved sports. She played volleyball to pass the time until basketball season started. Lucy loved to paint, journal, and listen to music. She also loved to take walks and take pictures in and of nature. She loved to sit around a fire and tell stories of all kinds with family and friends. Lucy could put a smile on anyone's face and made friends everywhere she went. Lucy was so outgoing and helpful to all. She often was asking everyone what else do you need done. We would like to thank everyone for the support, calls and text from everyone through this difficult time. Lucy passed away on June 14, 2023 at New Effington, South Dakota as the result of an accident.
Lucy is survived by her mom Ashley Johnson, Canton, SD; her father Joseph Kohl Jr., New Effington, SD; Siblings Jaymin (Kassidy) Kohl, Canton, SD, Joseph Kohl III, Flandreau, SD, Shirley Kohl, and Fayleigh Johnson, Canton, SD, Josiah Kohl, Jerusha Kohl and Jeriah Kohl; Nephew Jaxtyn Kohl, Canton, SD; Grandparents Louie (Sherri) Johnson, Grandma Anita Johnson, Joseph (Kimberly) Kohl, Grandma Lila Renville; and many Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins.
Lucy was preceded in death by Great-grandparents Frank and Violet Barse, Great-grandparents Chris and Shirley Johnson; Great-grandparents Fred and Lucy Kohl; Lorretta Renville; Grandpas Felix, Alan, John and Norman Johnson; Aunt Autumn Johnson; Cousin Scottlyn Canku.
