Funeral Service for Lorraine V. Sampson, 93 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD with the Rev. Suzie Benidt and Rev. Vern Donnell officiating. Organist will be Ollie Yost and soloist will be Pat Schubert. Pallbearers will be Chris Urlacher, Mike Puckett, Corey Book, Dallas Roggeman, Matt Freudenthal, Irv Slaamot, Curtis Dahl, and Jeff Krieger. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Lorraine's Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren. Interment will be in the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation on Friday, December 26, 2014 at the Cahill Funeral Chapel from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with a 7:00 P.M. Prayer Service. Family will be present from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Lorraine was born on a farm near Hammer, SD, on July 19, 1921. She passed away on December 21, 2014 at the Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton, SD, at the age of 93 years. Lorraine was the oldest of 3 daughters born to Louis and Sadie (Lavachek) Larson. When she was six years old, the Larson family moved into Sisseton, and Lorraine lived there for the remainder of her life. She entered the Tekakwitha Living Center in December of 2013, residing there for one year. Lorraine attended Sisseton public schools, graduating from Central High School with the class of 1939. She attended Northern State Teachers' College for a semester, then she began her long working career in Sisseton. Her first job was with the Martha Morris Insurance Agency. Following that were bookkeeper/news reporter positions at the Sisseton Courier Newspaper, the Farmers Union Coop, and Bailey Plumbing. She was at the Roberts County Treasurer's Office for 4 years, followed by a stint at the US Agricultural Conservation Service. She returned to the insurance industry working as an agent for Joseph Flaa Insurance, then was employed by the Jack Theeler Insurance Agency. Eventually, she and her husband purchased the Theeler Agency and renamed it Sampson Insurance which they operated for many years. On October 3, 1949, Lorraine married Sherman F. Sampson. He was a hometown guy, a World War 2 veteran, and their families lived just across the alley from each other in Sisseton for many years. Lorraine and Sherman built their home in Sisseton, and raised two children, Joan and Scott. They spent 27 happy years together. They enjoyed time at their cabin on Clear Lake. When Lorraine wasn't doing chores there, paddle boating was her favorite leisure time activity. After Sherman's health required him to change jobs, they operated the Sampson Insurance Agency together until Sherman's death in August of 1976. Lorraine remained a widow for 38 years. She continued to run Sampson Insurance until its sale in the 1985 when she retired. In the evenings, Lorraine played Whist and Aggravation, her favorite games. TV game shows and old movies were also popular with her. She liked the Big Bands and was always humming a tune. After retiring, Lorraine needed to keep busy and found that she missed being around people, so she accepted a part time job at Lowell Lundstrom Ministries in Sisseton where she served as receptionist and prayer caller. She ended up being employed there for 15 years, working beyond her 80th birthday. She volunteered her time to a number of organizations including the Sisseton Booster Club/Chamber of Commerce, RSVP, Gray Ladies, American Legion Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary, the Senior Center, and Christian Women's organization. Lorraine was a Red Hatter. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church for over 50 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher and a member of Church Council in earlier years. She participated in Joy Circle activities, Bible studies, and most recently she was a quilter who cut out many squares. She also enjoyed activities and fellowship with her friends at the Family Life Assembly of God Church. Lorraine's faith in God guided her daily life, and she desired that others, especially her family, share in that faith and be with her some day in heaven. Lorraine was a great mother, the center of our family, and we could always count on her love and support. She will be greatly missed. Lorraine loved to spend time with her family.
Survivors include her two children, Joan (Jim) Freudenthal of Aberdeen; Scott (Shannon) Sampson of Milbank, 6 grandchildren – Kellie Book, Jamie Rademacher, Jamie Puckett, Kim Urlacher, Dustie Roggeman, and Matt Freudenthal. She was also blessed with 8 great grandchildren. One sister, Vera Schiefelbein of Pierre also survives her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Sherman; sister, Cleo Wegleitner, and niece, Lori Tribbit.
