Obituary

Funeral Service for Lorenzo Burley, 56 of Sisseton, SD will be held on Saturday, April 2, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at the Big Coulee District Center with Louie Johnson officiating. Pallbearers will be Raymond Burley, Tom Wilson, David Goette, Steve Hudson, Anthony Aadland, and Ed Halbert. Honorary Pallbearers will be Louie Johnson, Magoo HolyBull, Sonny LaBlanc, Maynard Boudreaux, Johnny LaBatte, Brian Renville Jr., Dyami Gonsalves, Angelo Moreno, J.R. Liawa, Leon Gronsalves, Raymond Grosuch, Joe Herman, Decorah Horn-Mullen, Jesse Burnett, Jacob Wolfe, Ryley Graves and Michael Wiggens. Drum Group will be Northern Thunder. All Night Wake Services will be held at the Big Coulee District Center at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Lorenzo "Lawrence" Burley, 56, Oglala Lakota, a very loving & passionate father & husband, of Sisseton, SD continued his journey on Monday evening, March 28th, 2016 surrounded by family at Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Lorenzo was born November, 23 1959 in Oakland, California to Frances Perez & William Burley. Lorenzo grew up in Hayward, California, after losing both parents to tragedy's early during his childhood; he was raised by his Great Grandparents Rufina Garcia & Anastacio "Ted" G. Garcia.
Lorenzo graduated from Sunset High School in Hayward, Ca. He went onto complete his secondary degree at Vocational School as a Certified Welder.
Throughout his lifetime, Lorenzo worked as a Harley Davidson's Custom Frame Welder for California Performance Iron, Chopper Guys in Vallejo, CA.
Lorenzo was a member of AIM, the American Indian Movement, an activist & advocate for Social Justice Rights on all issues pertaining to the Native American Community in the San Francisco, Bay Area. He was also a member of the drum group Northern Thunder based out of the Bay Area.
Lorenzo is survived by his wife, Dawn Burley; children, Winona Burley, Naomi Burley, Raymond Burley & Wambdi Burley. Hunka daughters Alicia Rose Gangone & Codee Maria Sierras (SWO Lake Traverse Reservation, SD) and eldest son Rocky Burley in San Francisco, CA. His first Granddaughter, Honey Rosalina Jackson. His sister, Debi Lee Cisneros of Modesto, CA, Brothers JR Laiwa, Wailaki Nation, Ca. and Steve Hudson of Rapid City, SD. His nieces & nephews, Jeremy Lindsay, Angelo Moreno, Dyami Gonsalves, Niya Gonsalves, Kinyanku Gonsalves, & Wakanhdi Sa Misun Gonsalves, Ka-Ah-Shun Laiwa. Extended families include Buffalo Lake Winwangye Wacipi Tiospaye's, the Alcorcha family, Mata family & Sisneroz families of the Modesto/Central Valley, CA.
He was preceded in death by both parents, Frances Perez & William Burley, Great Grandparents Rufina & Anastacio Ted Garcia, his brother Joel MacArthur and niece Wakanda Onawa Gonsalves.
