Lois was born on April 19, 1937, on a farm north of Wagner, SD, to Vene and Eleanor (Eggers) Eitemiller. She grew up participating in 4H and rural youth groups, which she enjoyed. Lois graduated from Armour High School in 1956. She attended and graduated from South Dakota State University with a bachelor's degree in Home Economics Education. She worked as a substitute teacher for many years.
Lois met Marvin Olson at South Dakota State University, and they were married on June 3, 1962, in Wagner, SD. They lived in Brookings, SD; Columbus, NE; Philip, SD; Mission, SD; and in Wagnor, SD for nine years, before settling in Sisseton, SD in 1977. In 1963 they welcomed their first son, Richard. Two years later, in 1965, Raymond completed their family.
Over the years Lois worked as a substitute teacher and at Schiltz Foods, but her most important role was as a homemaker. She enjoyed quilting, making many personalized quilts for family and friends. Lois was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, involved in circle and quilting groups.
Marv and Lois enjoyed square dancing for more than 50 years, until their health made it too hard to dance, but they continued to enjoy the visiting with their square dance family. In addition, she loved to hunt, fish, garden, camp, and anything outdoors.
In 2001, Marv and Lois made the trip of their lives which took 46 days in a pickup camper. They visited friends in Saskatchewan, square danced in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and worked their way up the Alcan highway and across Canada ending up in Fairbanks, Alaska. They traveled through the southern part of Alaska and back into Canada, working their way home.
Lois Mae (Eitemiller) Olson passed away at Tekakwitha Nursing Home, Sisseton, SD surrounded by family, on October 26, 2024.
