She attended St. Peter's Catholic School in Sisseton, country school west of Peever, and high school in Peever, SD. Lois was united in marriage to Joseph Karst on February 1, 1949, at St Peter's Catholic Church in Sisseton. Joe and Lois were the parents of seven boys-Frank, David, Gary, Kevin, Douglas, Gregory and James. Lois was well-known for her cooking skills, cooking for her family and friends whenever they dropped by. She made a career out of cooking, first at the Sisseton Livestock Auction, later at the Mobil Cafe, and finally at Melvin's Cafe which she later purchased from Flossie Hackberth. Potato salad, donuts, cream puffs, lemon meringue pie and especially, homemade caramel rolls were Lois Karst specialties. When she wasn't cooking, she kept busy raising her seven boys on the family farm near Peever, SD. She loved old-time music, and in her earlier years, she and Joe attended dances with friends. She also loved playing cards, and for a number of years she played with her two sister-in-laws and cousin, Elaine and Elaine and Lois and Lois. Lois also enjoyed handicrafts, especially crocheting. She made numerous afghans, table clothes, doilies, dolls and quilts for her children and grandchildren. In 2000, Lois was thrilled to be able to travel with relatives to England to meet the English Hernimans. She was a past member of the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Auxiliary #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Auxiliary #3342, St. Peter's Alter Society, and the Red Hat Ladies. Lois passed away on September 7, 2019 at the Tekakwitha Living Center in Sisseton, SD.
