Memorial Service for Kathryn Anne (Canty) Karst, 76, of Peever, SD will be held on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 2:00 PM at Peever Lutheran Church, Peever, South Dakota with the Rev. Sheila Pohl and Fr. Joseph Hitpas, OMI Officiating. Organist will be Estelle Pearson with special music by Karla Karst and Pat Schubert. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of Kathryn's Grandchildren, Karlie, Kellie, Katie, Derek, Hannah and Olivia. Interment will be in the Peever Cemetery, Peever, South Dakota at a later date. Kathryn Anne Canty was born on January 1, 1937 in Wellsville, New York to Daniel and Elizabeth (McDonough) Canty. She was raised in Belmont, New York and graduated from High School in 1954. She attended Alfred University in Hornell, New York. In 1956 she started working for the U.S. State Department in Mexico City, Costa Rica, Mozembique, South Africa, and Morocco in Northern Africa until 1969. She traveled throughout the world. She met her husband Paul in Rabat, Morocco, where she was working as an assistant to the ambassador at the U.S. embassy and Paul was a sergeant in the Marine Corps working embassy security. Paul and Kathy were united in marriage on February 1, 1969 in Belmont, New York. They lived briefly in Vermont before moving to South Dakota where Paul was raised. Kathy worked at Northeast Cooperative Special Education Department for over twenty years while they raised their family in Groton, SD. Paul and Kathy retired to the country lifestyle in Peever, SD. She was an avid sewer and loved to make quilts. She loved baseball, and followed her sons and grandchildren wherever they played. She enjoyed attending many baseball games throughout her travels as well as local ballgames. She was so proud of her sons being military minded and of what they have done and accomplished. She enjoyed camping and fishing on the pontoon when she could. Kathy fought cancer since 2000 and was escorted to heaven on May 25, 2013 at her home.
Kathryn is survived by her husband, Paul of Peever, South Dakota; two sons, Daniel Benjamin and wife, Karla of Peever, South Dakota, and Jayson Fredrick and fiancé, Christy of Kindred, North Dakota; six grandchildren, Karlie, Kellie, Katie, Derek, Hannah and Olivia.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents, Daniel and Elizabeth, one brother, Daniel; grandparents, William and Hulga McDonough.
