Obituary

Funeral services for Julius W. Valnes, 100, of Sisseton, SD will be held on Wednesday,October 31, 2012 at 10:00 AM at the Peever Lutheran Church, Peever, SD with Rev. Sheila Pohl officiating. The organist will be Kim Lawrence and soloist will be Wade Johnson.
Pallbearers will be greatgrandsons: Logan Iverson, Tel Iverson, Austin DesLauriers, Adam DesLauriers, Dylan DesLauriers, Collin Fitz, Andrew Fitz, Cole Reller, Derek Valnes, Matt Carns, Ben Uphoff and Jason Uphoff. Honorary pallbearers will be all of Julius' greatgranddaughters,
friends and neighbors. Internment will be in One Road Bethel Cemetary, rural Sisseton, SD. There will be visitation on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the Cahill Funeral Chapel from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. There will be visitation one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Wednesday. The Cahill Funeral Chapel,Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.
Julius was born on February 11, l9l2 to Edwin and Lena (Solberg) Valnes in rural Sisseton, SD. They lived in Dry Wood Lake Township. Julius was baptized at Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church and attended school in Dry Wood and Agency Townships. Julius was united in marriage to Ida Grinde on June 9, 1934 at Sisseton, SD. They lived on rural farms in One
Road and Dry Wood Townships and also in Sisseton for a time. On January 10, 1946, they purchased a 160 acre farm in One Road Township, where they made their home. Julius worked for the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and at the Torness Fur Farm. Ida's
parents gave them a cow and that's how they got started raising cattle. They used horses
for farm work until the 1950's when they got a Case tractor. Julius enjoyed hunting pheasants,
fishing and trapping mink and muskrats. He played a lot of baseball and was a pitcher for the
Peever and Sisseton teams. Ida and Julius were members of One Road Bethel Church before they became members of Peever Lutheran Church. Ida passed away July 26, l992. Julius continued to live on the farm, selling his cattle in 1994. He continued haying until he was into his 90's. In the spring of 2008, he entered the Tekawitha Living Center. Julius passed away on October 27 ,2012 at the Tekawitha Living Center.
Julius is survived by one daughter, Darlene and her husband, Irvin Iverson Jr. of Sisseton, SD; one daughter-in-law, Joyce Valnes of Luverne, MN; eight grandchildren, twenty great grandchildren and nineteen great-great grandchildren.
Julius was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ida; one son, Gene; one daughter, Ellen;
stepmother, Ella; two brothers, Raymond and Sam Valnes; two sisters, Ilet Barrett and Lila Thorne.
