Obituary

Funeral Service for Joyce Gladys Niles, 93, of Waubay, SD will be Monday, June 8, 2026 at 10:30 A.M.  at Ortley Free Lutheran Church, Ortley, SD with Pastor Ken Flaten officiating. Organist will be Dr. Angela Miller-Niles and soloist will be Sonja Niles-Bergen. Pall Bearers will be Adam Niles, Heather Carter, Eric Niles, Travis Niles, Justin Niles, Justin Niles, Tobey Niles, Tyson Niles, Rindy Niles Jr., Tanner Starr, Hunter Britzman. Honorary Pall Bearers will be the Hi-Hope Extension Club Members and Staff from the Sisseton Livestock and Auction. Visitation will be on Sunday, June 7, 2026 from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD.  Interment will be at the Lebanon Cemetery, Summit, SD. Cahill Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Joyce Gladys (German)  Niles was born on May 15, 1933, to Henry and Esther (Wren) German at home in rural Peever, SD. She attended One Road #2 Country School through 8th grade. She then attended and graduated from Peever High School. Joyce married her high school sweetheart Harley Niles at her parents' home in Roberts County on October 17, 1952. They lived in rural Wilmot until moving to Oak Island Ranch, Waubay, South Dakota. Joyce and Harley raised cattle, and she cooked and baked at the Sisseton Livestock Auction. She was well known there for her delicious pies and known to some as the Pie Lady. Joyce also baked and decorated many big, beautiful cakes for all occasions. Kids in Waubay can still remember her giving a cake decorating class for them. She was a long-time member of the Hi-Hope Extension Club and helped with the Hurricane Rascals 4-H Club. Joyce loved being outside and worked side-by-side with Harley on the ranch. She also loved caring for her numerous flower gardens, flea markets, antiques, decorating for Christmas, working in the yard, camping with family at Fort Sisseton and she had a huge doll collection. Her favorite pets were cats and horses. She bottled fed and saved many kittens and calves. She loved to go along with Harley when he played for dances. Joyce absolutely loved and cherished time spent with family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She made and hosted many big, delicious holiday meals for her family. She also loved friends and family stopping by for coffee, playing cards and Mexican Train and especially enjoyed when the California family would come to visit. Joyce passed away at the Wilmot Care Center on May 26, 2026.
Joyce is survived by her son Harlow (Maxine) Niles, Waubay, SD; her daughters Sherry (Bob) Starr and Kristi (Todd) Britzman both of Watertown, SD; daughter in-law Sue Berger-Niles; grandchildren Adam Niles, Heather (Brad) Carter, Eric (Carrie) Niles, Travis (April) Niles, Justin (Barb) Niles, Toby Niles, Tyson (Angie) Niles, Randy (Holly) Niles Jr., Tanner (Jocelyn) Starr, and Hunter (Kaden) Britzman; great grandchildren Raina and Keegan Carter, Hayden, Henry, Ivan, Owen, Linken, Everly, Maxum, Ava, and Huxley Niles, Nora and Rhett Starr; Brothers in-laws Larry Niles of Watertown, SD, Jerry Niles of Wilmot, SD, and sister-in-law Donna (Joe) Remackel of Inver Grove, MN.
Joyce was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harley of 65 years, her parents; her son Randy; brothers, Johnny , Stanley, Bob and Henry Jr.; and her great-granddaughter Callisa.
