Funeral Service for Jonas Arthur Grey, Wambdi Waŋji "One Eagle", 79, of Webster, SD will be held on Friday, November 18, 2022 at 10:30 A.M. at the Enemy Swim Community Center, Enemy Swim, SD with Rev. Clifford Canku, Fr. Gregg Frankman, Deacon Cordell, Valorie Augustson, St. James's Episcopal Lay Reader. Drum Group will be Toka Nuwan & Wahpe Kute. Special Music by Butch Felix, Anaysia Johnson Bryer & Broderick Roberts. There will be a Wake Service on Tuesday, November 15 ^, 2022 starting at 7:00 P.M. and all night wakes on Wednesday, November 16, 2022 and Thursday, November 17,2020 starting at 7:00 P.M. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.

Jonas was born in a log cabin in Bad Hollow (Sica Hollow) on November 29, 1942 to Phillip and Agnes (Eagle) Grey.  Later his family moved three miles southwest of Gray Lake, a lake named after his great grandfather.  He attended Tekakwitha Children's Home from grades 1 to 6.  It was there as an altar boy that he first thought of ministry in the Church. Grades 7 and 8 were done at St. Peter's Catholic School and he graduated from Sisseton Public High School in 1963.  Being interested in becoming a priest he befriended the priests and brothers of Blue Cloud Abbey, Marvin, SD. From 1964-67 he lived and worked with the Benedictines helping to construct the church and auditorium.  He attended workshops in Indian ministry and lay-reading in Wakopola and Yankton, SD.  He was chosen delegate many times to the Catholic Sioux Indian Congress and Tekakwitha Conference.  He was secretary of the local chapter of the Brotherhood of Christian Unity, a 103 year old society made up of Indian people from the different Christian churches.  Assisting as a song leader, lay reader and prayer leader both in English and his Dakota language.  Jonas was installed in the ministries of Lector (lay reader) and extraordinary minister of the Eucharist on May 9, 1976. He was also a Spiritual Leader for the Sisseton Wahpeton Traditional Burial Grounds. Around 1983/1984 Jonas started learning our Traditional way of life.  He was a HolyMan, or Medicine Man, from Cannon Ball, ND named Charles WiseSpirit.  After Charles passed away, Jonas continued learning from another Medicine Man, Mr. Joe Flying Bye, from Little Eagle, South Dakota.  After many many years of Sundance and Humblehiciya…, he was ready to hold his own ceremonies of healing and doctoring.  Jonas also had the honor of learning from CrowDog.  Jonas loved his traditional way of life, always doing naming ceremony for youth or relative, and pipe blessings, or just praying for people.  Jonas had a very big heart for all his people. Jonas Sundance many many years at Denis Gill's Sundance in Toka Nuwan. He became close friends with Dennis Gill, Gaylord Gill, Archie White, Rollin Ryan, Rich Nicolar, Darren Redday and Clifford Canku. In 1985 he Hunka Misty Redday-Renville as his daughter, because he had no children and said he wanted to be called "Dad". Jonas passed away on November 11, 2022 at Bethesda Nursing Home, Webster, SD.

Jonas is survived by one brother Andrew Grey Sr. of Parshall, ND;  four sisters Clarice Medicine Stone of Twin Buttes, ND, Darlene Williams of Waubay, SD; RoseMary DeCoteau of Solen, ND; and Verzella Grey of Moorhead, MN; adopted daughters Misty Redday of Waubay, SD and Delight Heminger of Sisseton, SD; many nieces, nephews, cousins, also adopted Andrew Grey III, Justin Grey, Leta Grey and Andrea Cooper.

Jonas was preceded in death by his parents Phillip and Agnes (Eagle) Grey; one brother Magnus Grey; two sisters Bernice Hopkins and Claudette Grey; Paternal Grandparents Andrew and Lilly (Keeble) Grey; and Maternal grandparents Robert and Nellie (Bluedog) Eagle.
