Graveside Service for Irving Monson will be held on August 12, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the Sisseton Cemetery, Sisseton, SD with Military Rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342.  A lunch to follow at the High-Rise Community Room, Sisseton, SD.

Irving W. Monson was born at home in McKinley Township, rural Veblen, April 19, 1919, to Orville and Mae (Jones) Monson. Irving was the oldest of four children, living his entire childhood on the Monson Farm. He spent many years caring for animals and farming the land with skills he learned to love. He attended McKinley #1 township school until the 8th grade and was needed home for more chores on the farm. He was inducted during World War II into the United States Army in August of 1942, at Fort Snelling, MN. He was an Expert Rifle Sharpshooter (03) marksman, earning him a longshoreman upgraded occupational specialty. He was honorably discharged October 1945, with the Asiatic Pacific Service medal, American Theatre Service medal, and Good Conduct medal. He did this willingly for our nation and for us all. The integrity, discipline, and self-respect reflected in him a lifetime. He returned home and began to start a family of his own. He engrained the knowledge of life skills and education in his children. Irving was an honorable, kind, and loving father. He was an optimistic listener and quite opinionated to religious and economic topics. His 103 years of life let him experience growth of the United States at astronomical leaps and bounds. He outlived his parents, siblings, son, grandson, and dear friends. He is greatly remembered in our hearts, and he left us with a mind full of memories.

Irving is survived by beloved JoAnne Frenier; his sons Dale (Trisha) Frenier, Levi (Annette) DuMarce Jr., Johnathan Gill, Reynold DuMarce, Kenneth (Camille) Gill; daughters Dolores (Samuel) Allen, Janice White Shield, Donna DuMarce, Kathleen (Harlan) DuMarce, Beverly Gill; sister in-law Vivian Monson; granddaughters Jacqueline Allen and Erica Fischer; grandson Del Frenier; nephews John (Audrey) Eaton, Harold (Lynn) Eaton, David (Katie) Eaton, Terry (Mary Kay) Monson, Daniel Monson, Wade Hofland, Robert Hofland, Lance Hofland; nieces Jill (David) Lehmann, Faye Kann, Linda Reisenweber, Susan Yammerino, Holly Butrum, Lauri (Bill) Fugate, Carol (Clark) Ringsaker, Lezli Monson, and families.

Irving is preceded in death by his parents Orville and Mae Monson; son Darrell Frenier; grandson Timothy R. LaBatte Jr.; brother James Monson; sisters Alyce Spooner and Patricia Hofland; brothers in-law Loy Eaton, Reuben Spooner, and Roger Hofland; nephews Keith Butrum and James Yammerino; niece Leah Hofland-Williams.
